Bauhaus.Atelier | Info Shop Café

Dear guests,

Since 2010, the »Bauhaus.Atelier | Info Shop Café« has been located in the renovated Brendel's Atelier in the courtyard of the main building of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and is the central contact point for guests as well as a communicative place for students, staff and teachers.

Here you can find out about our university and its history, buy university souvenirs or enjoy freshly brewed coffee in our café and take in the lively place. On Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the Bauhaus Walks start here, student guided tours through the founding sites of the historic Bauhaus.

Come by, we look forward to seeing you!

Bauhaus.Atelier | Shop

Whether you are on the hunt for a stylish pen, elegant pencil, practical backpack or a book for the Bauhaus Walks—the shop at the Bauhaus.Atelier offers branded products and souvenirs for anyone looking to carry a piece of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar with them every day, gift it to someone special, or take it home with them.

The visitor information shop is not just a place to buy souvenirs, clothing, books and other memorabilia though; it also acts as a platform for innovative products from our university designers. It is where you can find an ever-changing assortment of unique handmade items that reflect the creative, out-of-the-ordinary, multifaceted profile of the university.

Stop by, browse and be inspired!

Be bold. Be slanted. Be irregular. Simply B.

Work at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is characterised by a willingness to experiment, internationality and a sense of community—and this extends beyond the boundaries of the individual academic fields. Each of us contributes to the internal and external image of the university with our own research, art and projects, and from the sum of these individual creative processes, it is constantly being renewed and stays alive.

This idea has inspired a new limited edition line of environmentally friendly products. Every »B« represents each individual project, idea and part of our identity that we bring to the community. Here we can be as we like. Simply B.

The design is based on the »B« typeface created by Eric Jentzsch in 2019. Whether bold, slanted or irregular—there is a t-shirt, hoodie, bag, backpack, pin or pen for everyone. Which one is right for you?

Studio, Dining Hall, Workshop and Café - a building with a chequered history

Built as a studio for Professor Albert Brendel, an animal portrait painter and director of the Weimar Art School, the building caused quite a sensation when it was presented to the public in 1886. Situated in the court of the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts, it was used by the class of animal illustrators and painters who benefited from the natural lighting, provided by the glass dome of its iron roof structure. However, parts of the sensational glass hip roof were closed off in 1904 when the small studio was transferred to the Prellerhof.

When the State Bauhaus was founded, the glass studio played a central albeit different role for all the workshop classes. With the addition of a kitchen, the building became the central dining hall for the members of the Bauhaus from 1919 until 1925.

When the Bauhaus was forced to leave Weimar, operations at the small dining facility also came to an end. The successor institutions used the former studio as a storage building until well into the 1990s.

The Bauhaus dining hall was registered as a historic landmark by the Thuringian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in 1999. In recent years, the building had been used as a workshop and storage facility for sculptures. It was then that the university's Executive Board considered redesigning the historic building to fulfil a new function.

After extensive renovation, the building was reopened in 2009 under the new name Bauhaus.Atelier | Info Shop Café and operated by the university - from 2009 to 2020 in cooperation with the BauhausTransferzentrum Design - as a welcome centre and contact point for guests as well as students, staff and lecturers.
