Course reserve collections
General
Course reserve collections contain literature curated specifically for a particular lecture by teaching staff and set up and organized by the library as part of their services. Literature in a course reserve is made available in the library as a physical copy and/or in Moodle as part of an electronic course reserve collection.
Students
You will find the physical course reserve for your lectures separated from, but nearby the respective parts of our collection:
Architecture and Urbanism Main building, floor +1 Civil and environmental engineering Main building, floor +2 Art and design Limona, gallery Media Limona, gallery
Items from currently active course reserves will be marked as such in BibSearch and cannot be borrowed for the duration of the semester.
If you run a Bauhaus.Module, we offer the same service as for teaching staff.
Teaching staff
You can set up a course reserve directly in Moodle and include up to 30 books from our physical collection. After registering your course in Moodle, you will find the »course reserve collection« option when you »add an activity or resource«.
Moodle also allows you to reserve books for your course reserve, suggest a book to the library for acquisition, include both licenses and freely available electronic resources and request scans from printed resources from the library. German copyright law (§ 60a UrhG) enables the library to provide up to 15 percent of any one book.
A video tutorial on editing a course reserve collection is available in Moodle. Please feel free to contact us for advice at any time. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar eLab will also be happy to assist you in using Moodle.
Archives
We keep a list of all past course reserves reaching back to summer semester 2019.
Collections
General
The university library's collection is centered around the four faculties Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Art and Design and Media, their respective courses of study and current topics in teachin, studying and research. In addition, the library holds historical collections, special collections and donations. The library maintains its collection by selecting study and research literature according to the needs of the user and the subjects.
Historic collections
The university library holds a historic collection of around 8,000 volumes collected since 1860, the majority of which come from the 19th and 20th century. The provenance seals of these books and periodicals were indexed in a project spanning several years. These works are available worldwide in the Digitale Sammlungen following a digitalization and indexing project funded by Deutsche Forschungsgesellschaft (DFG) that ran from 2009 to 2012.
Digital Collections
In the Digital Collections, you will find digitised material made available by various facilities at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, which generally originates from older, copyright-free collections.
The University Library bases the digital collections it makes available on its historical holdings, beginning with the collection of the Grand Ducal Art School, founded in 1860.
The professorship of ‘Theory of Media Worlds’ (Prof. Henning Schmidgen) provides, through its ‘Virtual Laboratory’, a platform for texts and images on various aspects of the history of science, not least on experiments and instruments.
All data can be downloaded or printed out. If you use our digitised material in other contexts, we would be grateful if you could cite the source and, where possible, provide us with a specimen copy.

Artists’ Book Collection
Heimo Bachstein film studies collection
Heimo Bachstein film studies collection
Thanks to a generous donation by cinephile, film critic, actor and director Heimo Bachstein (1937–2011) film researchers in Weimar can draw from 1,000 books and 3,500 individual issues of 150 different periodicals. We were able to, for example, complete our collection of the French film journal »Cahiers du Cinéma«. A large gap in the university library's film literature collection is further closed by rare film books by Sergej Eisenstein and Federico Fellini, as well as correspondence, original photographs, film posters and painstakingly assembles themed collections ranging from experimental film to Andy Warhol. The film enthusiast intended to cohesively preserve this collection, liaised by senior fellow of the Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Beilenhoff (1943–2021), and make it available to film researchers in Weimar.
Starting in 2026 the university library has additionally listed the collection's photographs in the Kalliope meta catalog.
The materials of the collection »Heimo Bachstein« at the Bauhaus-Universität university library are available free of charge to all library account holders for research purposes. Digital reproductions are available to view on site; physical reproductions are not allowed. Conditions are listed in detail in the Ausführungsregelung für den Sonderbestand Sammlung Heimo Bachstein.

Literature collections
Our literature collections are assembled in cooperation with various university groups and provide gateways to different socially relevant issues. We continually add new collections.
Classism
This collection was compiled in cooperation with the Diversity Department as part of the 2025 thematic focus on Classism. It brings together the aspects of disadvantage and discrimination on the basis of social status/origin (classism) and on the basis of impairment and chronic illness (ableism).
AUSBLICKSPUNKTE.
In remembrance of French sociologist and philosopher Maurice Halbwachs, this collection features books by and about Halbwachs and his groundbreaking theory of collective memory. In honour of Halbwachs the university renamed its largest auditorium to Maurice-Halbwachs-Auditorium.
In summer 1944 Halbwachs was deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar and died in March 1945 from the conditions of his imprisonment.
Racism-critical university
This literature collection was created in cooperation with the diversity department within the 2024 focus topic »racism-critical university«. The selected books and films are meant to provide an impulse to as well as to help you consider the topic of racism in your research or art and include it as a topic in lectures.
Climate protection and sustainability
The books in this collection provide well-founded information to help design projects in accordance with the 17 UN sustainability goals. Additionally the selection is meant to encourage you to take a conscious look at the ecological reorienting of construction and the possibilities offered by renewable energies in order to make your cities more sustainable and to create an environmentally friendly culture of civil engineering.
Erinnern gestalten
We created this collection in cooperation with the research project »Geschichte der Bauhausstraße 11« (The history of Bauhausstrasse 11). It contains literature on the current state of architectural, planning and medical historical research on national socialism in Weimar and Thuringia, collects perspectives on new interpretations of remembrance politics in the distant and recent past, and emphasizes that right-wing extremism is a threat to this day.
Technical standards
The university library provides access to DIN Media's Nautos database for its patrons. Nautos serves as your gateway to DIN and ISO standards in full text (DIN: German and English language). Some entries feature a short content summary. Nautos is available from within the university network, and for university members additionally from outside the network by VPN connection.
The VDE-NormenBibliothek provides direct access to all valid standards issued by the Association for Electrical Technologies (VDE) – more than 4,000 documents in total. More than 1,100 VDE standards withdrawn since December 2010 are additionally available in full text. All standards are listed with extensive bibliographic data. This service also provides access to all DIN-VDE standards (German language link).
The university library's collection holds around 20,000 TGL standards. These standards were issued by the East German government and were mandatory for all products, procedures and technologies. They are still needed especially for renovating and modernizing East German buildings.
The TGLs are digitized and available to download for free in our TGL database.
The DDR-Baukataloge are a collection of documents issued by East German authorities including the department of architectural engineering and the Bauakademie der DDR. The collection includes civil engineering methods and technologies, standardized parts and engineering systems and construction drawings, among others.
The library's collection holds both printed materials and microforms. Printed materials are listed in thecatalogue (OPAC). Searching for the keywords »Fertigbau« and »Katalog« will bring up all printed materials to be further refined. Microform materials are listed in the PDF below.
Many of these documents are also available digitally in the »Spezialarchiv Bauen in der DDR« database maintained by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development, part of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning.
On request we provide copies of TGL standards and DDR-Baukataloge for a fee according to the university library's fee schedule.
Please send us an e-mail to request copies. We will provide an estimate of the cost.
This copy service is strictly limited to TGL standards and DDR-Baukataloge. You are welcome to make your own copies and scans from the library collection.
