Scholarship Award Ceremony 2014

»These awards are not only for you and your remarkable achievement, but also for our university! We are very proud to support such multifaceted, exciting projects,« said Vice President Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, addressing the scholarship holders in her welcoming speech. There was standing room only in the Oberlichtsaal – sponsors, recipients, supervising professors and interested students had come to witness the conferral of the scholarship awards in 13 different categories and learn something of the recipients’ extraordinary projects.

Students and doctoral candidates in all faculties and degree programmes were among this year’s recipients who also came from a wide range of countries; apart from Germany, there were winners from China, Russia, India, Austria and Italy. No wonder, as the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has established numerous international scholarship programmes, for example, the Bauhaus President Scholarship for high-achieving international students, awarded to Alla Grishko this year. She studies MediaArchitecture and received the scholarship in recognition of her remarkable student-based, intercultural commitment. The Study Completion Scholarships funded through the STIBET programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) were awarded to international doctoral candidates to promote the success of international doctoral projects.

The Bauhaus Scholarship was also awarded this year. To be eligible to receive the scholarship, students must not only demonstrate above-average academic achievement, but also a special connection to the Bauhaus. »Das Bauhaus Scholarship supports students who express the idea of the Bauhaus in their studies and in their projects. The scholarship promotes students who particularly identify themselves with the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and its guiding principle of interdisciplinarity,« explained Vice President Emes.

The Association to Promote Students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar e.V. is an organisation that supports students and doctoral candidates in all disciplines. The heads of the association, Mr. and Mrs. Fiedler, together with Prof. Dr. Andreas Ziemann, provide personal advising to the scholarship recipients. Everyone benefits in the end. According to Gudrun Fiedler, »We are able to keep up to date on the latest scientific advances, and the students are able to develop their projects further.« In addition to twelve Germany Scholarship recipients, the winners included a number of female graduates, doctoral candidates and postdocs who received funding through the Equal Opportunity Programme. Numerous doctoral projects also received funding this year through the Thuringian Post-Graduate Funding Programme, while three postdocs were awarded a twelve-month research grant for their work at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

Another highlight of the award ceremony was a short presentation given by PhD student Till Ansgar Baumhauer. Last year, he received a scholarship to fund his PhD project at the Faculty of Art and Design titled »WARTIFACTS. The Experience of Violence and Art Production«. The report on the current status of his project on »art in dialogue with science« was the most convincing evidence that funding excellent students and junior researchers is money well-invested.

On behalf of the university, Prof. Emes thanked the numerous patrons and sponsors who so generously supported the outstanding students and their work. In concluding, she addressed the scholarship recipients once more, saying: “It was wonderful to gain insight into your work. We wish you much energy, curiosity and passion as you continue to develop your projects!”

The next call for applications will take place in autumn 2014. To view the complete list of scholarship programmes, click here.
