Expert Workshop on Sustainable Urban Mobility

On February 25 and 26, 2025, the ECL-AA held the INUMO Expert Workshop at the Goethe-Institut in Addis Ababa. The event focused on introducing and applying digital tools for integrated urban mobility planning in the Ethiopian context.

The workshop centered on the INUMO-Toolbox, developed to support the evaluation of urban structure plans by analyzing accessibility, traffic flows, and indicators such as walkability, street hierarchy, and land use suitability. The toolbox was demonstrated using real-world planning cases from Adama and Bishoftu, allowing participants to explore its practical application in sustainable urban development.

The first day began with an interactive discussion on digital approaches to mobility planning, followed by best practice lectures from Herbert Bork (stadtland, Vienna), and Dr. Mathewos Asfaw (MATHEWOS Consult, Addis Ababa). In the afternoon, participants took part in a hands-on session using the INUMO toolbox to evaluate master plan proposals. The second day continued this work with extended exercises, followed by a feedback and discussion round. The workshop also provided opportunities for networking and exchange, including joint meals and an evening event with live music by the Emerging Music Laboratory (emergingmusiclab.com).

Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the workshop is part of the broader INUMO (Integrated Urban Mobility) project, which aims to strengthen digital capacities and interdisciplinary collaboration in urban planning across Sub-Saharan Africa.
