Zahl 30 als Symbol für das Namensjubiläum der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

Members of a university have the right to participate in the university’s decision-making process. This opportunity is provided through self-administration and its committees. Professors, students, academic and non-academic personnel are recognised as groups belonging to the university which have the right – and responsibility – to participate in the self-administration of the university. Each group elects representatives to serve two-year terms, with the exception of students whose representatives are elected for one-year terms. All the groups are equitably represented at the committee level.

Equal Opportunity Advisory Board Less More

The Advisory Board on Gender Equality is an advisory, specialist and non-partisan body.

The aim of its work is to support the Equal Opportunity Officer and to work towards the realisation of equality and equal opportunities, as set out in Section 6(4) and (8) of the Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürHG), and to ensure the constitutionally guaranteed equal opportunities for women and men at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The decentralised Equal Opportunity Officers also participate in the procedures for filling posts funded from the university budget and third-party grants.

The aim is to discuss and identify new approaches to a modern equality policy and to support the work of the Equal Opportunity Officer. The Equal Opportunity Advisory Board therefore addresses current issues as well as medium- and long-term perspectives and initiatives relating to equality policy.

The Advisory Board on Gender Equality consists of the Equal Opportunity Officer (Chair), one decentralised equal opportunity officer from each of the faculties and the university administration and services, and two female students.

Mid-level academic staff representation Less More

At the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, we refer to academic employees – that is, teaching / research associates – as the »Mittelbau«, sometimes also as the »academic Mittelbau«.

This term is not defined anywhere in writing, but is best understood in the context of the history of the university as an institution: academic employees occupy the space between students and professors. In a sense, therefore, the term also reproduces the hierarchical structure of the university, which is certainly open to question.

However, as far as we are aware, there is currently no other term that is as concise and widely used, so we too refer to ourselves as »academic mid-level staff« in direct communication. In official contexts, we usually use the term »academic employee«. We would be delighted to receive suggestions for an alternative term!
