Zahl 30 als Symbol für das Namensjubiläum der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

With HISinOne-RES, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is introducing a university-wide research information system (FIS). It supports the structured collection, management and use of research information and provides a reliable foundation for research management, reporting and inter-university collaboration in Thuringia. It is based on the standard for research information in Germany (Core Data Set for Research, KDSF).

Overview Less More

Overview

The FIS consolidates research information at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar into a single database, thereby laying the foundations for structured, quality-assured and analysable information management. In the long term, the system will also enable researchers and participating institutions to record and maintain data in a decentralised manner.

In particular, the following details are recorded:

  • Research projects
  • Publications
  • Third-party funding
  • Collaborations
  • Patents
  • Other academic achievements

This means that data is recorded only once in a shared database and can be used for various purposes, such as:

  • Reports
  • Enquiries
  • Analyses
  • the public presentation of research achievements

In this way, the FIS helps to

  • simplifying processes
  • create transparency
  • make the handling of research information more efficient

It enables modern research management, quality-assured data management and consistent research reporting.

Current status of the roll-out Less More

Current status of the roll-out

The roll-out of the FIS at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is taking place in a series of sequential stages with the support of AT-CRIS GmbH. The FIS at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is currently in a trial phase run by the Research Department. Work is currently underway on digitising the third-party funding reporting system.

The FIS is a module within the all-in-one campus management software HISinOne from HIS eG, which is already in use at our university under the name ‘Bauhaus.CampusPortal’, alongside the student application module. The integration of the FIS database into the Bauhaus.CampusPortal is planned for autumn 2026. In addition, an interface to the university bibliography is currently being developed. This will enable publications already validated in the university bibliography to be transferred to the FIS and linked there to research projects.

The next milestones are:

  • Update to the latest system version
  • Digitisation of the third-party funding report
  • Migration of the FIS database to the production system in autumn 2026
  • Integration with Identity Management (IDM)
  • Establishment of an interface to the university bibliography
  • Test phase with selected users
  • Gradual roll-out to other areas of the university

Planned go-live by the end of 2026

FIS Project Group: Thuringian Universities Less More

FIS Project Group: Thuringian Universities

The introduction of the FIS at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar forms part of a cross-university initiative in the Free State of Thuringia. As part of the ‘Thuringian Strategy for Digitalisation in Higher Education’, the project is funded by the Strategy and Innovation Budget of the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (TMBWK, formerly the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society, TMWWDG) until the end of 2026. In this context, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has taken on the lead role in project management and coordination.

Since 2021, the founding members of the project group have included:

  • Bauhaus Universität Weimar
  • Technische Universität Ilmenau
  • University of Erfurt

Since 2023, the following have also been participating in the project:

  • Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena
  • Friedrich Schiller University Jena
  • Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences
  • Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences

This means that a standardised software package for a research information system is being operated and jointly developed at almost all universities in Thuringia.

Networking and professional exchange Less More

Networking and professional exchange

The introduction and further development of HISinOne-RES at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is taking place in close technical collaboration with various stakeholders in the field of research information.

In this way, specialist requirements, practical experience and developments in the field of research information are continuously incorporated into the project.

Core Data Set: Research Less More

A key technical reference point for the introduction of the research information system is the Core Research Data Set (KDSF). The KDSF represents a nationally developed standard for the uniform structuring of research information. It supports universities and research institutions in recording data on research activities in a systematic, traceable and comparable manner.

Adherence to the KDSF creates a standardised and robust database for:

  • reporting
  • Statistics
  • Evaluations
  • strategic analyses

The introduction of HISinOne-RES therefore not only establishes a technical system, but also creates a sustainable foundation for the institutional management of research information based on the KDSF.

Benefits of a research information system Less More

A research information system offers significant benefits for researchers, staff and the university as a whole. These include, in particular:

  • The collation of research information in a shared database
  • prospective decentralised maintenance of data by researchers and institutions
  • Avoiding duplicate data entry and improving the availability of relevant information
  • Simplification of reporting, enquiries and analyses
  • greater transparency and improved visibility of research activities and academic achievements
  • Improved data quality and a reliable basis for reporting and accountability requirements, strategic analyses and research reporting

Outlook

As the roll-out of the Research Information System (FIS) progresses, the system’s functions and potential uses will be gradually expanded. This project website will provide ongoing updates on the next steps in the roll-out process, responsibilities and the support available.
