Winners of the »Born to be Bauhaus 2020« art prize announced

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Modernist Archive and the KulturTragWerk e. V. have announced the winners of the »Born to be Bauhaus« competition, which is already in its fourth year. The art pieces are selected each year by a jury and subsequently purchased by the Modernist Archive and become part of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s custodial collection. The two prizewinners will also have the opportunity to present their work in an exhibition at the Eiermannbau Apolda from 15 September to 17 October 2020.

31 projects were submitted to the competition this year (including joint projects). The submissions were virtually viewed and evaluated by the jury on 15–16 May 2020. In light of the current uncertain situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, the exhibition will open at the Eiermannbau Apolda on 15 September 2020 without an official ceremony and admission will be restricted in line with the current guidelines. Speeches, a Campari bar and music are planned for the closing evening of Saturday, 17 October 2020.

This year, the jury comprised experts in art history, art critique and art production, including the Berlin-based art historian and curator Nils Emmerichs, the Berlin-based artist Isabella Fürnkäs, Berlin-based art critic Maren Lübbke-Tidow, and Michael Lüthy, a professor for art history and theory at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

The »Born to be Bauhaus« art prize was established in 2017 by the Modernist Archive and Überland e. V. for a period of five years. Every year, up to five artists are awarded prizes which help enable them to showcase their works in a comprehensive exhibition at various locations to mark the centenary of the 1923 Bauhaus exhibition. All students and alumni of the Faculty of Art and Design of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are eligible to submit entries.
