Concept
The degree programme is structured in modules and covers all areas of building physics. Foundational modules form the basis for the rest of the programme. They provide an overview of the respective subject area, impart the theoretical background knowledge required for the advanced modules, and help the study group to get to know one another.
In the advanced modules, the knowledge gained from the foundational modules is deepened and expanded. In addition to theory, this includes practical application in the form of project work. Accompanying software workshops and practical sessions demonstrate efficient calculation and analysis methods and provide the necessary tools for carrying out the projects.
As part of various courses and your Master’s thesis, you can be actively involved in research projects run by the Chair of Building Physics and will also have the opportunity to work in the laboratories.
Procedure
The start of the course is marked by a face-to-face phase, which provides an introduction to the course topics and the knowledge required to use the learning platform. It also offers the opportunity to get to know your own study group in person.
During the subsequent online phase, the learning tasks form the central thread of the course. They structure the course, help students organise their personal study time through set deadlines, and coordinate self-study and group work. Self-assessments and the marking of assignments by lecturers enable students to assess their own level of knowledge throughout the semester.
A written examination or the presentation of project results at the end of the semester marks the conclusion of a course.
Some courses are supplemented by additional face-to-face sessions during the semester. These sessions teach practical skills tailored to the course.
Module structure
A part-time degree programme requires a good balance between work, study and everyday life. Thanks to the modular structure, you can flexibly adapt your pace of study to suit your personal circumstances. You will receive a certificate of attendance for successfully completed modules; certain combinations of modules can be completed with a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS). Once you have achieved the required number of credit points, you can register for your Master’s thesis.
Please note that our modules are not designed to meet the requirements of specific registers (e.g. KfW, DENA, etc.), but are modules within the Master’s degree programme.
Learning formats during your degree course
Self-study
Texts, graphics, videos and virtual laboratories convey the course content clearly. Self-assessment tests and exercises with sample answers help you to check your own progress. You have a great deal of flexibility in how you organise your time.
Live online sessions
Seminars and consultations complement the self-study in the virtual classroom. Sessions usually take place in the evenings and are tailored to working professionals.
Group work
Working in groups, you’ll tackle tasks together, develop solutions and discuss results. This allows you to deepen your understanding of the subject matter through discussion with others.
Project- and case-based work
Through practical work on specific projects and case studies, you will apply your knowledge in a practical context and link theoretical principles to typical planning and analysis tasks.
Experiments, measurements, laboratory exercises and workshops
Practical exercises, measurement and analysis methods, and software workshops complement the lectures and provide you with essential tools for use in your professional practice.
Exams and graduation
The modules conclude with an examination, which may take the form of a written exam, a project defence or a written assignment. Further information on this can be found in the current study and examination regulations.
Completion of individual modules
If you wish to study individual modules from the Master’s programme, upon successful completion you will receive a certificate of attendance stating the course content, the mark achieved and the ECTS credits earned.
University Certificate
Upon successful completion of specific combinations of modules, you will receive a university certificate (CAS) from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
What is ‘blended learning’?
The continuing education programme is designed as a ‘blended learning’ programme. It combines the advantages of traditional face-to-face sessions with those of online learning. On the one hand, it offers the flexibility, location-independence and effectiveness of digital learning methods. On the other hand, however, the social aspects of getting to know one another in person and learning together are not neglected. In this way, the programme structure offers a high degree of variety, whilst at the same time allowing considerable freedom in terms of personal time management.
Technology
The technical foundation of the programme is the Moodle learning platform, which provides the necessary infrastructure. It supports both individual learning and teamwork through a comprehensive range of research, communication and administrative tools. In addition to learning materials and assignments, these include discussion forums and noticeboards, file-sharing facilities, and Big Blue Button as a tool for live online sessions.
The learning platform is web-based, allowing access to relevant tools and data from any computer with an internet connection.
As some of the specialist software only runs on Windows computers, we provide Windows computers for students using other operating systems during the workshops.
Support
A wide range of communication channels enables us to provide students with intensive support. Each course is supervised by a study group tutor, who handles all organisational matters and acts as the first point of contact for any queries arising during the learning process. In addition, each course is supervised by a lecturer, who is on hand to assist with subject-specific questions and issues.
In addition to traditional email and telephone contact, discussion forums and platform messages facilitate communication not only between lecturers and students but also within the study groups. Through mutual assistance and support from lecturers and study group tutors, help can be provided quickly.
Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS) offer specialised knowledge on a particular topic as part of Master’s degree programmes, enabling students to gain an additional qualification in a specific subject area. For the ‘Building Physics and Energy-Efficient Building Optimisation’ programme, you can obtain such university certificates in the areas of ‘Acoustics’, ‘Thermal Performance’ and ‘Moisture’. They are based on the quality standards of the German Society for Scientific Further Education and Distance Learning (DGWF).

Further training: a benefit for your business
What further training opportunities are available for my staff?
With the part-time degree programme »Bauphysik und energetische Gebäudeoptimierung« (‘Building Physics and Energy-Efficient Building Design’), you can provide your staff with targeted further training without them having to take time off work. Thanks to the programme’s largely time- and location-flexible structure, combined with the option to study at your own pace, it can be easily integrated into the day-to-day working routine.
Your company will benefit directly from the newly acquired specialist knowledge: current practical issues can be incorporated into the course, and new skills can be applied immediately in the workplace. In this way, you can develop your specialist staff in a targeted manner, strengthen in-house expertise and, at the same time, increase your employees’ loyalty to your company.
How can I recruit and develop the right skilled staff for my business?
Applicants do not always already possess all the specialist skills your company requires. Part-time further education programmes offer you the opportunity to recruit promising professionals and provide them with targeted further training, either through a full Master’s degree programme or a suitable Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).
For Bachelor’s graduates with some initial work experience in particular, the opportunity to develop their skills whilst working can be especially attractive. In this way, you can enhance existing potential, build up specialist knowledge in a targeted manner and retain qualified staff within your organisation in the long term.
In addition, you can send us job vacancies for publication on the programme’s website or get in touch with graduates via our list of experts.
How can this degree programme help to develop my company’s skills?
Students acquire in-depth and wide-ranging knowledge in the field of building physics. This knowledge can help to strengthen existing areas of expertise within your organisation and develop new ones. At the same time, you will benefit from the latest research findings and from the new professional contacts that your staff will bring back to the organisation.
Can I get advice as a business?
Would you like to provide your staff with targeted further training, or find out more about the part-time Master’s programme? The programme coordinator, Karin Gorges, will be happy to advise you on the options available and on how you can support your staff in their professional development.
FAQs
Time commitment during your degree course
Can I easily balance my studies with a full-time job?
Most of our students work full-time. However, the number of modules taken varies considerably from person to person. The hours stated correspond to the average workload required of participants for the course. Generally speaking, 1 credit point in a course represents an average of 30 hours’ workload for students. The actual individual workload may, however, vary depending on prior knowledge and study habits.
How much time do I need to set aside each week for my further education course?
For the Master’s programme, you can expect to spend around 15 to 20 hours a week studying. However, the time required always depends on your prior knowledge and study habits. If you spread the course over a longer period, the weekly study time will be reduced accordingly.
How often do I need to be on campus each term?
The course begins with a face-to-face session running from Friday lunchtime to Saturday afternoon. At the end of the semester, there is another similar face-to-face session for the exams.
Depending on the module, a workshop may also be scheduled. This lasts 1 to 2 days. The practical modules also take place in Weimar and last 2 days each for ‘Sound and Moisture’ and 3 days for ‘Heat and Fire Protection’.
The number of on-campus days therefore depends heavily on the degree you are aiming for and the combination of subjects in the respective semester. If you complete the entire Master’s programme within the standard duration of 2 years, there will be:
- 8 days of on-campus study in the 1st semester,
- 7 days of on-campus teaching in the second semester,
- 6 days of on-campus attendance in the third semester, and
- 2 days of on-campus teaching in the 4th semester.
The attendance sessions are generally scheduled so that each attendance phase includes one Saturday.
Entry requirements: a bachelor’s degree
Can I start a Master’s degree straight after completing my Bachelor’s degree?
The Master’s programme in Building Physics awards 60 ECTS credits. You must therefore have completed 240 ECTS credits from a first degree and have at least one year’s professional experience.
If you obtained fewer ECTS credits during your Bachelor’s degree, you will first need to make up the shortfall. This can be done through the recognition of professional experience (at least four years), which can count towards up to 30 ECTS credits. You can also obtain ECTS credits through additional modules, which you can undertake, for example, on the ‘User-Oriented Building Renovation’ programme, the ‘Water and Environment’ programme or another accredited programme.
In such cases, the solutions are always highly individual. Please contact us for a personal consultation so that we can find a solution tailored to your specific circumstances.
Organisation of studies
Am I enrolled at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar whilst I am studying there?
Students on a Master’s programme are always enrolled as students.
Can I register for all courses at any time?
It is not possible to enrol on all modules at any time. The various modules are divided between a summer and a winter semester. They can therefore only be taken during those respective periods. The exception to this is the module ‘Damage Analysis’, which is offered in both the summer and winter semesters.
When does the Master’s programme start?
The Master’s programme starts in both the winter and summer semesters. If you start in the summer semester, you will study the modules in a different order.
Can I plan the duration of my studies to suit my individual needs?
Yes. Whilst there is a standard duration of study, individual study plans can generally always be drawn up. Please get in touch with us!
Can I bring my child along to the face-to-face sessions?
To help balance family, work and study commitments, the ‘Bauhäuschen’ childcare service is also available to students and teaching staff with children who are attending face-to-face sessions as part of part-time degree programmes at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. For part-time degree programmes, it is possible to use the service during on-campus sessions on Fridays until 8.00 pm at the latest and at weekends. In this case, childcare can be provided for up to eight hours per day.
Advance booking is required for this service. To allow for timely planning, please register your childcare request at least 14 days before the desired date. Bookings are made via INFOtake and can be made in blocks (one block corresponds to two hours). The fee for a two-hour supervision block on weekdays is €4.00 for students, €6.50 for staff and €10.00 for external users. At weekends, the rates for a two-hour childcare block are €6.00 for students, €8.50 for staff and €12.00 for external visitors.
Further information about the ‘Bauhäuschen’ – such as who will look after my child, how to book childcare, and what to pack for my child – can be found on the ‘Bauhäuschen’ website.
If you have any enquiries, please contact INFOtake in good time at:
infotake-weimar@stw-thueringen.de or by telephone on +49 (0) 3641 / 5546 850.
Can I take just individual modules from the degree programme?
Provided the relevant entry requirements are met, it is also possible to study individual modules. You can also accumulate module credits to obtain a university certificate (CAS – Certificate of Advanced Studies) or progress step by step towards a Master’s degree.
Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS)
What are Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS)?
Following the example of the Swiss higher education system, the DGWF (German Society for Distance Learning) also recommends that German universities offer small-scale study programmes. A CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) comprises university modules at Master’s level totalling at least 10 LP. As our system is based on modules of 3 LP, a CAS at our institution comprises 12 LP.
