Description

In recent weeks, internet-based services for learning, training, and interpersonal exchange have gained rapidly in importance. The established interfaces for this are restricted to the exchange of images, video, and text. As an alternative, virtual and augmented reality promise jointly experienced and jointly explorable 3D environments for information transfer and knowledge exchange.

In our project "Immersive Wikipedia", we want to explore the possibilities of experiencing information that is directly embedded into a virtual world. To this end, we will test available internet-based applications of collaborative virtual reality (e.g. Mozilla Hubs and Unity-based network games) for their usability in this regard and extend them with new interaction techniques.

We will focus on the presentation of information depending on the current usage context, the joint interaction with different forms of information, and the navigation through the information space by both individual users and groups.

The project meetings are also held in distributed online spaces. The basic prerequisite for the participation in the project from a remote location is a fast Internet connection and a powerful computer with a decent graphics card. We can provide / loan the necessary hardware to students who are in Weimar.

Requirements

  • Programming experience and the successful completion of the VR course are helpful foundations for a successful participation.
  • To work in distributed virtual environments, participants should have access to a fast Internet connection as well as a powerful computer with a graphics card.
(If necessary, appropriate hardware could be provided/loaned in Weimar.)

Assessment

  • active participation in the project
  • presentation of solutions/results
  • participation in intermediate and final project presentations
