Josha Helmchen is a Scientific Associate at the Chair of Design Theory and Design Research at the Faculty of Art and Design. He studied architecture at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 2020 and his Master’s degree in the program Resource Architecture in 2022. He works on the externally funded project »Crafts of the Future« and, as part of his doctoral research, is investigating the potential of AI-supported design processes in circular architecture.
His work is situated at the intersection of computational design, circular building practices and digital fabrication. Since 2020, he has been teaching in the field of Digital Methods in Architecture at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, with a focus on experimental design strategies and digital fabrication processes. From 2023 to 2025, he worked there as a research associate in the project EINZ – Experimental Building for Innovation and Circularity, which links the reuse of building materials with AI-supported planning and construction processes. In his research and teaching, he pursues practice-oriented design-build approaches, computational design and AI-based workflows to further develop and critically reflect methods of digital and circular design.
