made by us

Photography, film and installation | 2014 - 2015
Funded by the Bauhaus Degree Completion Scholarship for Students

»made by us« is a political and media-reflective, artistic-scientific project on the release of radioactivity into the environment. Saori Kaneko and Richard Welz present an interdisciplinary and intercultural examination of the socially relevant but strongly suppressed issue of radioactive contamination, in particular its long-term effects caused by nuclear catastrophes and uranium mining. Due to their personal background and relationship to the topic, the two alumni concentrated their project on East Germany and Japan.

Welz is primarily responsible for the photographic and cinematic elements of the projects. Kaneko examines the role of atomic energy in the future by means of artistic installations and painting. The partners scrutinise the positive and negative aspects of nuclear development and highlight parallels between the events in Chernobyl and Fukushima. The next step in their artistic research project is to find suitable presentation forms for their work.
