Health insurance is compulsory in most countries, but different regulations apply. Please ask your health insurance provider about your existing insurance cover and the need to extend your insurance cover for your stay abroad. Have this confirmed in writing by your health insurance company and take the confirmation with you abroad. |
For ERASMUS students travelling within the EU:
Your German health insurance card is also a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This means that you are also covered by insurance in other European countries. However, please be sure to check with your health insurance company whether it is necessary to take out additional health insurance abroad or whether it is recommended to extend (e.g. repatriation) and supplement (e.g. liability insurance) your cover.
For students travelling worldwide:
Please enquire with your German health insurance company which benefits your insurance covers in non-European countries. We strongly recommend that you take out international health insurance to ensure that hospital costs, repatriation, etc. are covered in the event of an accident. Please also note the special entry regulations of the host country or partner university (e.g. requirements for proof of a certain level of insurance in the event of an accident).
