»in progress«: Students Show »How it Feels to Study at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar« from Very Different Perspectives
Dr. Simon Frisch (Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs) emphasises the great significance of project work at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar: »Teaching has three dimensions here: specialist knowledge is first imparted, usually during a lecture. This can then be applied during an individual project – an exercise, for instance. Then the content and practical experience can be shared in a seminar during which additional materials or texts are explored in greater depth. The teaching staff support students, whereby the maxim of »each one teach one« is key to teaching at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. This project-oriented format, which one might expect more in artistic and creative fields, is used in all four faculties. Thus it is not only used in the design-artistic and design-constructive study programmes, but also in the engineering, theoretical, digital and economics programmes.«
In their five semester projects, the twelve students from the faculties of architecture and urbanism, civil and environmental engineering, art and design, and media show clearly how studying in Weimar means combining theory and practice creatively, but also that the goal is not always perfection. Rather, the process and »learning by doing« are crucial – from the sketch to the prototype. Failure is also part of the learning process.
