ACHTUNG – increased media consumption during the summaery2025 may lead to new findings
In the Open Labs, which are traditionally accompanied by the smell of barbecued wares, cold drinks and discussions outdoors on the Friday (11 July), visitors will encounter machines that talk, software that can debate and people who research at the interface between technology, design and society. Students and lecturers will present projects on artificial intelligence, virtual realities, algorithms, visual worlds and media cultures – and also ask: what do we actually believe when we talk of the future?
An interactive argumentation platform with AI, a performative live coding lab and stories that machines not only tell but also draw can be experienced, for example. Other projects consider social proximity in virtual spaces, explore the potential of VR for shared experiences or make the invisible visible – for instance, through experimental visualisations of movement data or innovative 3D graphics technologies.

The study programmes in media studies and media management also juggle ideas that deserve attention – both literally and figuratively. The projects address current issues in media usage, communication cultures, strategic public spheres and social change: how can we repair not just things, but also narratives, attitudes and relationships? What images do study programmes use to portray themselves – and how can university communications go beyond the clichés?
During a student conference on the topic of »repairing«, concepts of media culture will be examined from different perspectives – from care work and ecological thinking to new narrative styles for things that are broken or fragile.
Another project considers the question of how public service media can remain relevant in times of digitalisation, fragmentation and algorithmic distribution. Hands-on approaches will also be taken: strategic communication concepts, media economic analyses and innovative formats for the media landscape of tomorrow were developed during the media management study programme.
Visitors are invited to consider media as spaces of possibility – not just technically, but above all socially. They show how attention can be directed, stories told differently and reality reframed.
