Two Houses

The opening of the exhibition, curated by the Chair of Design and Housing and open from 24 April to 15 May 2019, begins with a screening of the film of the same name and ends on 15 May with the »Buildings in Film« event with Susanne Bürner.

The film »Two Houses« was created by Verena von Beckerath with Niklas Fanelsa, Momoko Yasaka and Maximilian von Zepelin in conjunction with Jens Franke (camera, sound, editing) between January and April 2019. It is part of the »Two Houses – Learning from Migishi Atelier and Bunzo Yamaguchi House« research project launched by the Chair of Design and Housing in 2017 after a trip to Japan.

The film and exhibition tackle the interrelations between Bauhaus and Japan via two buildings in the suburbs of Tokyo – the Migishi workshop and the Bunzo Yamaguchi House. The buildings were designed in the 1930s and 1940s by the Japanese architects Iwao Yamawaki (1898-1987), who previously studied at Bauhaus, and Bunzo Yamaguchi (1902-1978), who worked in Walter Gropuis’s office, and are now privately owned. The film documents the buildings’ architecture, tells the stories of their inhabitants, and depicts their lives today in and with the buildings.

The »Two Houses« film and exhibition are funded by the Thuringian State Chancellery and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s alumni office.
