»Transformation des Wohnens« Symposium: A Dialogue Between Science and Practice

Housing in changing. Increasing urbanisation and social evolution mean the pressure on housing forms and structures is growing. How can housing be designed in the future so that it is socially just and ecologically sustainable? The »Transformation des Wohnens – Herausforderungen und Zugänge im praxisorientierten Dialog« symposium is dedicated to addressing these challenges. On 11 and 12 September, experts from academia, the industry, and civil society will meet in Berlin to analyse current developments, discuss new approaches, and present perspectives on housing design.

The symposium is being organised by the »vhw-Forschung des vhw – Bundesverbands für Wohnen und Stadtentwicklung e.V.«, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Goethe University Frankfurt’s »Gewohnter Wandel. Gesellschaftliche Transformationen und räumliche Materialisierung des Wohnens« DFG research training group, and the TU Berlin’s »Housing Lab des Institutes für Stadt- und Regionalplanung (ISR)«.

The event centres around the topic of housing transformation. This includes the socio-ecological orientation of housing, innovative housing models, new spatial concepts, and fair access to housing.

Scientific perspectives as well as practical solutions and challenges will be discussed. Three recent studies by the vhw Research Department will provide concrete starting points.

  • One of the studies looks at the contribution made by innovative, communal forms of housing to social cohesion and resource-efficient lifestyles.
  • The second highlights how municipalities can actively manage and influence the socio-ecological development of single-family home neighbourhoods.
  • The third study identifies approaches for achieving sufficient housing by illustrating how climate targets and social goals can be combined and supported at the same time by using existing living space in a more needs-based way.
