Even the most ambitious summaery visitors start to lose steam at some point or get »stuck« at a particularly interesting venue or project or simply because of the good atmosphere. But that’s how it’s meant to be: the summaery also means having a good, relaxing time and experiencing »the uni« at its best. Needless to say, it’s well worth picking a few highlights beforehand if you want to visit, watch or hear certain content. The best place to gain a preliminary impression is the summaery website: www.uni-weimar.de/summaery. »ACHTUNG« is the motto of this year’s annual exhibition, which was organised by the Faculty of Art & Design. We share insights here into some of the highlights.
Allow yourself to drift on the opening evening
The summaery will kick off at 4 p.m. on Thursday, 10 July with an opening ceremony and champagne reception behind the Main University Building. The Presidential Board and the deans will attend. From 6 p.m., DJs will perform live sets on the main stage set up between the Bauhaus.Atelier and the architecture cubes. They were carefully selected and curated during the teaching project and Bauhaus.Module 101 and will focus on current sounds from and with the Weimar student body: dancing is definitely allowed, by the way! The audience can even look forward to a drag show. Bands such as NO:LA, Doro et Entourage and Städtische Manieren will play on the forecourt outside the main building. Countless exhibitions and their vernissages will also run late into the night on the Thursday, when the atmosphere in the workshops is always particularly worth experiencing.
Events on Friday – spoiled for choice
Friday is absolutely packed with artistic and scientific presentations: between 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., staff from the Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering will explain their latest research projects, such as the Bauhaus Energy Hub, wood as a building material and the Gray to Green project with the vertical climate treatment plant. All three projects can be visited in Coudraystraße. Another recommendation is the panel discussion »Between TikTok, politics and crime series: what role does public service broadcasting play?«. Students from the Bauhaus University Weimar, University of Erfurt and University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar analysed the challenges of current information and communication spaces. The panel discussion at Bauhausstraße 11 starts at 1:30 pm and the accompanying exhibition will focus on the question of how public service broadcasting can remain relevant in a digital, fragmented media landscape. From 5 p.m., visitors can explore the Faculty of Media’s Open Labs and try out the faculty’s computer science projects for themselves. Clear explanations can be obtained straight from the researchers. The Lyonel Art Prize is traditionally awarded on Friday evening. It’s just a short walk from Bauhausstraße 11 to Berkaer Straße 11 and the change of venue guarantees a typical Bauhaus experience from 6 p.m.: outstanding technology and art simultaneously, just a five-minute walk apart. For those who make it to Belvederer Allee 58, the »Kosmos Hohe Pappeln« project by the Faculty of Architecture & Urbanism will open at 5 p.m., transforming the former home of Henry van de Velde into a design space for sustainable building and living.
summaery Saturday: projects all around town
It’s definitely worth doing some »project hopping« on Saturday. There are venues and individual presentations to visit all around town. The »Digital Burnout« photo walk will start from Marienstraße 1 at 3 p.m., the »Art of Repair« exhibition can be viewed at Eigenheim Gallery between 5 and 7 p.m., a »Microscope Live Performance« will take place in the Digital Bauhaus Lab at 6 p.m. and there’ll be plenty to see on the »Bauhaus Stage« on the large campus lawn from 8 p.m. Between these events, visitors can consciously – or unconsciously – pass by countless other summaery »outposts«: Karl-Liebknechtstraße 16, the Nike-Tempel, kiosk.6 the Gaswerk Weimar.
The exhibition in the main post office on Goetheplatz, which was organised almost overnight, is undoubtedly also worth a visit. The rooms on the first floor recently became available and will house projects from all four faculties this year. A panel discussion will be held at this »new« venue on Saturday as part of the annual theme of »BEYOND NOW — Environments«. Between 5 and 6:30 p.m., Christian Doeller (Faculty of Art & Design), Prof. Sigrun Langner (invited; Faculty of Architecture & Urbanism), Prof. Uwe Plank-Wiedenbeck (Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering) and Dr. Elena Vogman (Faculty of Media) will discuss various perspectives of the concept of »environments« and explore the diverse (inter)disciplinary approaches at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Ulrike Kuch.
Guided tours provide an overview
On Sunday, there’ll be another opportunity to check out all the venues. Visitors will very rarely find themselves still standing in front of closed doors at noon: the students must then be given a little leeway – for many, the summaery marks the end of an intense semester and they can finally breathe a sigh of relief after many weeks of intensive project work
See the website for the full programme and all information on the four-day event. A print version of the programme can be picked up at all central locations, including the main building, the Bauhaus.Atelier and the university library. During the summaery opening hours, students will be available at the information stand in the foyer of the main building to share tips and answer questions. Three suggestions for themed tours of the campus and town are provided on the event map and website: www.uni-weimar.de/index.php?id=79546
