In his »Hotel Interim«, Andreas Stanzel examined a vacant hotel in Halle and developed ideas for its temporary use. Documented in film, he analysed the building in terms of its architectural design and explored the building’s potential. The project focusses on how intermediate spaces can be actively designed and how resources in existing buildings can be sustainable used.
»Having chosen the topic himself, Andreas Stanzel has shown through his integrative approach in his Master's thesis that he can recognise, analyse, research, and solve complex issues and the associated conflicting goals. The theme of his work is extremely relevant, as it deals with the architectural heritage of the former GDR and its associated immaterial and material heritage. I am thrilled about this recognition«, says Verena von Beckerath, Professor of Housing Design in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism. She supervised the Master's thesis together with Prof. Anne Femmer and Prof. Florian Summa (both visiting professors for design and urban renewal at the Universität der Künste Berlin at the time), and Michael Kraus (scientific associate at the Professorship of Urban Architecture in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism).
With the biannual »EUmies Awards Young Talent«, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, together with the European Union, honours outstanding final projects by young architects in Europe. A total of 179 works from 30 countries were submitted to this year's competition for young talent.
Andreas Stanzel's work can be seen along with the other shortlisted nominations for the award until 23 November 2025 at the »Intelligens. Talent. EUmies Awards Young Talent 2025« exhibition at the Palazzo Mora in Venice.
