»LERNEN VOM BESTAND«: Student Project Exhibition from Weimar and Erfurt

In October 2024, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Fachhochschule Erfurt University of Applied Sciences will be showcasing student projects dedicated to questions of (re)building existing structures during a joint »Hochschulmonat« (university month). The projects are part of the »Sorge um den Bestand« exhibit, which the »Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten« (Association of German Architects) has been running in Erfurt’s »Bahnhallenquartiers« since August.

Building in the existing is a reaction to current issues, such as resource scarcity and sustainable development. However, the approach to and design of the built heritage is an individual and interdisciplinary responsibility to be negotiated by all those involved. The exhibition aims to draw awareness to this.

Projects range from conversion concepts from existing buildings, such as industrial buildings, monastery grounds, and prefabricated housing estates in Thuringia to research projects on squats in Berlin and reusing existing materials for new sustainable infrastructure.

The West Hall of the historic »Bahnhallenquartier«, located right near Erfurt's Main Station, is being reopened for the first time. The two universities are inviting visitors to join discussions and tours, which will focus on perspectives for existing buildings, strategies for the conversion and subsequent use of existing buildings, and the responsibility of universities in training future architects and city planners.
