The programme provides an in-depth understanding of how media influence ecological perception and knowledge at a time when topics such as climate change, digitalisation, and shaping a sustainable future are of central importance. From the representation of the »Blue Planet« to climate diagrams and digital simulations, media play a crucial role in visualising environmental problems and communicating solutions.
The programme takes an interdisciplinary approach and has students conducting research in project modules such as »Digitale Umgebungen«, »Planetary Media«, and »Archiv-Ökologien«. The curriculum is supplemented by lectures on topics such as the history and theory of ecology, the anthropocene, and natural philosophy. In collaboration with various departments, including Media Philosophy, Media Studies, and Digital Cultures, students receive a comprehensive education that prepares them for a variety of career paths.
»With ›Media Ecologies‹, we are responding to urgent social challenges that we are currently facing and offering an internationally unique programme that teaches students to critically question and actively shape the role of media in ecological discourses«, says programme director Prof. Dr. Henning Schmidgen.
Interested students can now apply for the degree programme. Additional information on application deadlines for the 2025/2026 winter semester can be found at www.uni-weimar.de/meco.
