Audio Tools II – Medium, Situation and Expanded Senses
Listening is always situated. Not only the objects we listen to are inseparable from its position, history and materiality, but also our listening selves. Listening is not a divine sense that provides synoptic clarity, but with certain technologies, we could expand our sensing perspectives, on which our understanding about the world is constructed.
In this course, with the focusing on technical expansion through specific microphones (incl. hydrophone, geophone, contact microphone, ambisonic microphone...etc.) and playback systems (stereo, binaural and multi-channel), we listen to different environments via different physical mediums, while the situations of the places and ourselves are reflected by borrowing the methodology of sensory ethnography. Participants will gain further knowledge on field recording, as well as proficiency in common editing and production software (e.g., Reaper, iZotope RX…).
