Radio.earth
This Fachmodul combines practiced acoustic ecology with experimental radio. radio.earth is a participatory radio art project that addresses the ecological crisis, its impact on our environment, and possibilities for action. Using custom-made, mobile outdoor microphone units, an open group of contributors worldwide enables and shares live audio streams at irregular intervals over hours to days. The microphones broadcast the soundscapes of selected sites and environments, with varying degrees of land use and degradation, from wild nature to agricultural, urban, and industrial zones. Nature is seen here as a cultural construction, closely interwoven with the ideas and problems of the Anthropocene.
In this sense, we want to use our senses as sensors and engage in our own practice. Embedded in a deeper exploration of the topics described above, we will construct mobile microphone units for subsequent active participation in radio.earth . An aspired goal is the construction and operation of a permanent solar-powered station that will stream from a research area of the Greifswalder Moor Center.
A central aspect is the exchange and discussion of what we can experience, grasp, learn and do through repeated, critical listening over time.
In this sense, we want to use our senses as sensors and engage in our own practice. Embedded in an in-depth examination of the topic described above, we will construct two mobile, solar-powered microphone units, which will then actively participate in Radio.Earth as stationary-mobile, permanent transmitting stations. The aim is that one of the solar-powered stations will stream from a protected location in the research area of the Greifswald Moor Center. For the other unit, we are planning to search for and find relevant locations in cooperation with local nature conservation groups in/around Weimar.
