Go, Trabi, Go! – Rethinking Mobility

Go, Trabi, Go!

What would a European people’s car look like if we were to reinvent it today?

Go, Trabi, Go! – Rethinking Mobility is an interdisciplinary innovation challenge that uses the Trabant not as a nostalgic object, but as a starting point for exploring the future of affordable, sustainable and resource-efficient mobility in Europe.

Students from different European universities and academic disciplines will work in international teams to investigate a real entrepreneurial opportunity. Taking the transformation of the European automotive industry as their broader context, they will explore changing mobility needs, markets and customer expectations as well as technological options, manufacturing concepts, business models, brand strategies and new venture opportunities.

The Trabant serves as an exemplary case: historically conceived as an accessible “people’s car”, it allows participants to ask a much broader question relevant across Europe: How can individual mobility be reimagined under the technological, economic, environmental and societal conditions of the 21st century?

The course combines an online preparation phase with an intensive, hands-on innovation sprint in Weimar. During the online phase, participants will explore the challenge from the perspectives of their own countries and disciplines and develop an initial understanding of European mobility markets and transformation. In Weimar, these perspectives will come together in interdisciplinary teams. Through customer discovery, expert interviews, opportunity assessment, business and brand development, mentoring and pitch coaching, the teams will transform their insights into concrete venture concepts and strategic recommendations.

The course concludes with a final pitch in which the teams present their vision for rethinking affordable mobility in Europe.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • analyse complex entrepreneurial opportunities in the context of the transformation of European mobility and industry;
  • identify and assess changing customer needs, market opportunities and technological developments across different European contexts;
  • evaluate innovation opportunities from multiple perspectives, including market, technology, manufacturing, sustainability, business model and brand;
  • apply entrepreneurial methods such as opportunity assessment, customer discovery and business model development to a real-world challenge;
  • collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary and intercultural teams and use different disciplinary and European perspectives as a resource for innovation;
  • translate research and insights into a coherent venture concept and develop evidence-based strategic recommendations;
  • communicate and defend an innovation concept through a compelling entrepreneurial narrative and professional pitch

Upon successful completion, participants will receive 3 ECTS.

The course is designed for Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students from all Bauhaus4EU partner universities who are interested in innovation, entrepreneurship and the future of mobility.

Students from all academic disciplines are welcome. No previous academic background in business, economics, entrepreneurship, engineering, mobility or related fields is required.

The course is intentionally interdisciplinary. Participants contribute the perspectives, methods and expertise of their respective disciplines, countries and cultural contexts to the challenge. This diversity of perspectives is considered an essential resource for developing new approaches to mobility and entrepreneurship in Europe.

The entrepreneurial and business knowledge required for the challenge will be provided through an online Entrepreneurship Toolkit, which participants can access for self-study and throughout the project. It includes learning modules on Entrepreneurship 101, Impact Entrepreneurship, Business Modelling and Strategic Planning, and Entrepreneurial Finance and Analysis.

The course is therefore particularly suitable for students who are curious, open to interdisciplinary collaboration and interested in transforming complex societal, technological and economic challenges into entrepreneurial opportunities.

No previous knowledge of entrepreneurship, business, economics or mobility is required. All relevant entrepreneurial concepts and methods will be introduced during the course and are additionally available through the online Entrepreneurship Toolkit for individual self-study.

Participants should have a good working knowledge of English and be willing to actively contribute to an intensive, interdisciplinary and intercultural team experience.
