WOMEN IN THE CITY

WOMEN IN THE CITY: Reading Space and Everyday Care through Gender

This course introduces a feminist approach to architecture and urbanism by examining how gender shapes the design, use, and experience of space. We will critically analyze public spaces through the lens of gender, questioning who feels welcome, who is visible, who is excluded, and how urban design reinforces or challenges social inequalities.

The course also extends this perspective to domestic environments, exploring housing through the concept of care. We will investigate how everyday practices of care influence the organization of living spaces and how architectural design can better support diverse forms of domestic life.

Students will be introduced to a range of qualitative research methods, including field observation, interviews, sketches, photography, and typological analysis. Through case studies and empirical investigations in and around Weimar, participants will develop the tools to critically assess the relationship between space, gender, and care, and to reflect on more inclusive approaches to architectural and urban design.

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • acquire key concepts and vocabulary in architecture, urban studies, and feminist spatial theory;
  • critically analyze public and domestic spaces through the lenses of gender and care;
  • reflect on their own spatial experiences using a sensitive and embodied approach;
  • apply qualitative research methods, including observation, interviews, and typological analysis;
  • develop skills in collaborative fieldwork, critical discussion, and the communication of research findings for the „Open.Atelier“.
