Media Art and Design student wins Best of Earth Award at FullDome Festival

In her five-minute film, the Master's student deals with the uneasy feeling of emptiness in our everyday lives, which is partly caused by extensive digital media consumption and the accompanying increasing alienation from the natural world. »In my film I dealt with nature as an increasingly digital representation of itself in most people's everyday lives, so that at the end of the short film it is only seen as a completely computer-generated simulation,« Kristin Jakubek describes her approach. »This was created using ›Generative Adversarial Network‹' (GAN), a form of machine le«arning."

»A Toothless Grin is a 360° piece of audio-visual poetry and ode to the performative arts. Its choreography is dependent on the fulldome medium and can be watched again and again to discover something new«, said the jury in explaining their decision. »Not only outstanding among the Student Submission, this piece was toted among several jury members as one of the strongest independent Best Short submissions. The cinematic technique, poetic approach, play of objects, soundtrack, and the captivity held by an audience throughout the piece is admirable. We’re looking forward to seeing what comes from this Independent Filmmaker in the medium in the future.«

The awards ceremony took place online via livestream from Berlin on Saturday 9 October. A first this year was that the Best of Earth competition was held in parallel at fulldome festivals in a total of four locations worldwide. The award ceremony can be watched afterwards on Youtube: youtu.be/o5APydESAmM.

About the FullDome Festival:
Founded in 2007 on the initiative of Micky Remann, Honorary Professor for Immersive Media at the Faculty of Art and Design, the FullDome Festival Jena is a pioneer in the field of immersive media. Not only are 360-degree films played, but on all three festival evenings concerts are staged with a live-generated 360-degree stage image. Every year, numerous productions by students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are among the works presented. You can find more information about the festival online at: fulldome-festival.de.

The film was produced as part of the teaching of Micky Remann, Honorary Professor for »Immersive Media« and was supported by the Kreativfonds and the Equal Opportunities Funding Programme of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The filming was partly realised within the framework of a grant from the Goethe-Institut on the occasion of the Kultursymposium Weimar 2021.
