Two Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Projects Make it to the RIMOWA Design Prize 2025 Final

21 projects made it to the semi-finals of the third edition of the competition. Each project was paired with a mentor with expertise in design, architecture, or art. The team refined their concepts during the two-month mentoring phase. Seven projects were selected from the group for the final, which will take the designs into the implementation stage in a practical development phase.

The Lightweight, Easy-to-Manoeuvre »TONBO« Hand Truck Carries up to 100 Kilogrammes

Marius Kintzel and Julian Solmsdorff’s »TONBO« is a reinterpretation of the classic hand truck. Inspired by bionic principals, the aluminium and recycled carbon fibre design impresses with its light weight, high functionality, and clear design language. The 12-inch inflated tires and interchangeable handles mean the »TONBO« can be easily manoeuvred over stairs and uneven terrain. The project’s RIMOWA mentor was Katharina Janku, CEO of USM Germany. Prof. Andreas Mühlenberend, Moritz Neuner, and Niklas Hamann from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar supervised the project.

Free Hands Thanks to »Standalone«: Crutches Change Everyday Life

Tom Kemter and Niels Cremer have transformed the classic forearm crutch into an aesthetically pleasing and functional aid called »Standalone«. Thanks to their innovative fold-out feet, the crutches can stand on their own, allowing the user to use their hands freely. This provides not only more flexibility, but also more dignity in everyday life. The project received competition support from Pierre Jorge Gonzalez and Judith Haase from the Berlin architecture firm Gonzalez Haase AAS. Prof. Gerrit Babtist and Niklas Hamann supervised the students through their teaching at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

Design students from 39 German universities are participating in the competition. In addition to the main prize of 20,000 euros, one project will be honoured with a special prize of 10,000 euros. The five finalists, including »TONBO« and »Standalone«, will each receive a prize of 5,000 euros. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on 13 May 2025 at the Gropius Bau in Berlin.
