The SfVR was founded in 2013 at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the context of the Graphic Design Professorship. As a workshop and laboratory for experimental image design, the »Space« promotes the exploration of abstract image worlds. It combines the investigative approach of a think tank with practical creative production and enables design students to develop innovative visual material.
The two cooperating universities are linked not only by the founding figure Lucius Burckhardt, who initiated the characteristic project studies at both educational institutions, but also by a consistently interdisciplinary and experimental orientation - including the applied disciplines - to this day.
Against the backdrop of an increasingly technological world of images and signs, an innovative methodology of design and creative research is one of the tasks that characterise a contemporary design or art degree programme.
Course work as well as Bachelor's and Master's theses from the degree programme in Visual Communication and results of SfVR workshops in South Korea, China, Iran, Taiwan, Bolivia and Ecuador over the last ten years will be on display in the HBKsaar gallery from 24 October to 21 December 2023.
