Doug Rosman is an artist and educator based in Chicago. He received a BA in Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts (ICAM) at the University of California, San Diego in 2014, and an MFA in Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019, where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Art & Technology / Sound Practices department. He makes/teaches across intersecting technological contexts including creative code, web art, computer vision, blockchain, and »Artificial Intelligence«.
Rosman grounds his art practice in the critical study and playful exploration of computational contexts, creating works that span interactive and immersive installation, web/net art, video, print-making and real-time performance. He is interested in how we relate to our technologies; who do we become when we are shaped by algorithms, and what happens when we are told to think of ourselves as biological computers? Recently, he has been strolling through the latent spaces of generative AI models, imagining a new cartography for worlds made of too many dimensions.

This workshop will introduce open source generative AI image-making technologies, culminating in a collaborative artwork. In addition to a technical exploration of these tools, this workshop will also provide a background of how these machine learning models are created, and a space to contend with the ethics of engaging with these tools.
Required devices: A laptop or desktop computer (Mac, Windows or Linux), no tablets. We will be doing everything in a web browser.
Tools and technologies:
ComfyUI – The main tool we'll use to interact with AI models. ComfyUI is an open source node-based interface for creating custom workflows to interact with open source AI tools. It can be clunky and intimidating to use, but it provides the most flexibility compared to other tools.
RunComfy – A cloud-based platform for renting powerful computers to use open source AI tools, specifically designed for using ComfyUI. It comes pre-installed with custom nodes, plugins and models. RunComfy costs ~$2.00 USD per hour.
Stable Diffusion – an open source text-to-image model
