Purpose of the Learning Agreement
Basically, the learning agreement is used to clarify the creditability of courses taken abroad for the degree program in which you are enrolled at your home university before the start of a semester abroad.
Binding nature of the learning agreement
All students who receive Erasmus funding for their stay at a partner university must complete a Learning Agreement. The “Before the mobility” section must be completed as standard before the start of the stay abroad and must be signed by all three parties involved:
- The student him/herself,
- the contact person responsible for the respective degree program at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and
- by the contact person at the host university (nominated students will be informed of the name by the host university during the enrollment process).
Students who do not receive Erasmus funding, as is usually the case for stays abroad at partner universities outside the EU, do not necessarily have to draw up a learning agreement. Nevertheless, all students who wish to have courses taken during their semester abroad credited towards their studies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are recommended to conclude a learning agreement.
Format der Lernvereinbarung
Within the EU and the Erasmus-funded area, there is a gradual changeover to Online Learning Agreements (OLAs). The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar already has the technical and administrative prerequisites for students to be able to create OLAs, provided that the partner university or the department where you will spend your semester abroad has also created the necessary prerequisites for this.
If you are asked to complete an OLA (sometimes referred to as a DLA - Digital Learning Agreement) as part of your enrollment at the exchange university or the approval of your Erasmus funding, please use the following guide to help you understand:
Manual Online Learning Agreement (deutsch)
Manual Online Learning Agreement (english)
Note: Your exchange university may provide you with a similar guide. You can then of course use this.
ATTENTION: Some universities in the EU use their own platforms or portals through which Learning Agreements are concluded in the course of enrolling for your exchange semester.
For these online versions, the above guide is only of very limited use (only in that it explains the basic principles of Learning Agreements). In these cases, you will receive instructions on how to complete them within these portals or via other communication channels (e-mails, websites, links, etc.) of the host university.
Instead of online versions, some universities in the Erasmus region currently still work with Learning Agreements in PDF format. Once completed, these documents are exchanged by email or uploaded to internet portals. Below you will find a PDF template that can be filled out on the computer:
Here too, the partner university may provide you with its own PDF templates for learning agreements. If these contain similar information to the above template, you can also use these templates to create a learning agreement.
For semesters abroad at partner universities within the EU or within the Erasmus-funded area, please only use PDF templates if the partner university does not yet allow OLAs! Otherwise you will have to create the document again as an OLA.
Learning Agreements: Status quo
As things stand at present, only a few countries outside the European Union will participate in the EU portal for OLAs. Even within the EU, the transition to OLAs is taking place gradually. Therefore, the “technical” way of creating learning agreements will continue to depend on which partner university and country you go to for your semester abroad. Only the respective exchange university can tell you how it works - especially as the procedures change everywhere from time to time.
