Registration for "Academic Bauhaus.modules" for the winter semester 2024/25 is no longer possible. For the summer semester 2025, "Academic Bauhaus.modules" can be registered between 6 January and 14 February 2025.

How is the interdisciplinary programme at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar structured?

The "Interdisciplinary courses" at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are aimed at students from various faculties and degree programmes. It is made up of regular compulsory courses that are open to all faculties and degree programmes, as well as additional interdisciplinary courses.

The "Interdisciplinary courses" are divided into three categories. We distinguish between

  • "Open courses",
  • "Academic Bauhaus.modules" and
  • "Student Bauhaus.modules".

Detailed information on the distinction between "Open courses", "Academic Bauhaus.modules" and "Student Bauhaus.modules" can be found here

1. What are "academic Bauhaus.modules"?

"Academic Bauhaus.modules" are designed as additional cross-faculty and cross-degree programme courses and are therefore not a regular part of the compulsory curriculum. They are designed by teachers at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and are dedicated to interdisciplinary topics. The aim is to enable cooperation between students and lecturers across faculty and degree programme boundaries. Furthermore, interdisciplinary foundation and introductory courses can be designed to facilitate the acquisition of a broad range of skills.

What does this mean?

Despite the diverse range of courses, there are numerous topics that are not anchored in individual degree programmes but are nevertheless of overarching interest and can usefully supplement university education. For example, the topics of "sustainability" and "climate justice" require all degree programmes to engage in critical self-reflection. Similarly, the question of how "democracy’ and ‘freedom" can be preserved, "racism" combated and "diversity" promoted arises across all faculties.

"Academic Bauhaus.modules" are therefore explicitly additional and interdisciplinary courses that are aimed equally at all students from all faculties and degree programmes. This means that all students participate outside of their compulsory curriculum. They must clarify the recognition of study and examination achievements in their degree programme with the relevant student advisory service at the start of the course.

"Academic Bauhaus modules" are therefore not thematically, methodically and didactically tailored to specific degree programmes and are not assigned to a specific faculty. This distinguishes them from the "open courses": These are a regular part of the curriculum of the respective degree programme for which the lecturer offering the course is originally employed.

What are the special organisational features?

Despite its interdisciplinary profile, a number of different processes and rules have become established in the regular courses offered by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the various faculties and degree programmes, which are not always familiar to students and lecturers from other faculties and degree programmes. The organisation of the ‘Bauhaus.modules’ therefore follows uniform processes and rules, regardless of the faculty offering them.

  • A "Bauhaus.module" must be registered with the Coordination of Interdisciplinary Teaching Programmes (University Development).
  • The entry in the bisoncoursecatalogue is created by the Coordination of Interdisciplinary Courses.
  • The bison entry follows a standardisedstructure.
  • The course is given a standardised course and examination number.
  • Standardised deadlines apply for course and examination registration.
  • Teachers and students are supervised and supported by the !interdisciplinary course programme".
2. Is my course suitable as an "Academic Bauhaus.module"?

Academic teaching staff, i.e. professors and academic or artistic staff, can decide whether and how they would like to participate in the "Interdisciplinary Course Programme" at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. They can open up their compulsory courses to students from other faculties and degree programmes, i.e. participate with an "open course". However, they can also offer additional cross-faculty and cross-programme courses, i.e. "Academic Bauhaus.modules". But what are the advantages and disadvantages of deciding in favour of one format or the other?

QUICK INFO

  • If you want the students of the degree programmes for which you are originally working to be able to attend the course without any problems and have their achievements recognised, then you should opt for an "open course".
  • If you want all participants to have the same conditions of participation because your course deals with a decidedly interdisciplinary topic, then you should opt for an "Academic Bauhaus.module".

3. How do I register an "Academic Bauhaus.module"?

Additional cross-faculty and cross-degree programme courses must be registered as an "Academic Bauhaus.module". To do this, fill out an online form (see above) so that the Coordination of Interdisciplinary Teaching Programmes (University Development) receives all the necessary information to create the corresponding entry in the bison course directory and advertise it on the "Bauhaus.module" website.

The registration form is also the form we use to request all the information for the bison entry. This information is somewhat more detailed than for regular courses. Why is that?

  • On the one hand, the information in the bison course catalogue forms the central basis for interested students to decide whether or not to register for an "academic Bauhaus.module".
  • On the other hand, however, the respective academic advisors also decide on the recognition of credits based on this information.

When formulating the bison entry for a "Bauhaus.module", it is therefore particularly important that both interested students and academic advisors find all the information they need. In the regular courses offered at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, very specific conventions have developed in the various faculties and degree programmes, which may not be familiar to members of other faculties and degree programmes. All information should be concise but precise.

What information is particularly important?

  • other faculties and degree programmes can grasp it concretely.
  • Interdisciplinary approach: Explain the specific interdisciplinary approach of your course. Which interdisciplinary questions are addressed? What interdisciplinary skills are taught? How do the participants benefit from the cross-faculty and cross-degree programme cooperation in your course?
  • Learning outcomes and skills acquisition: Formulate the learning outcomes and skills acquisition from the students' perspective. What do students know and be able to do after successfully completing your course? (This information is of particular interest for student counselling).
  • Didactic concept: Explain the methodological and didactic approach used to ensure the achievement of learning outcomes and the acquisition of competences. How do you react to the heterogeneous composition of a group of students from different faculties and study programmes?
  • Proof of performance: Explain the examinations that are used to determine the stated learning outcomes and the acquisition of competences. How is the examination performance differentiated according to study level (Bachelor's, Master's, doctorate)? (This information is particularly important for the student counselling service).

What other information do we need?

  • Information on the target group: For which study levels (Bachelor, Master, PhD) and for which faculties (AU, BU, KG, M) should the course be offered?
  • Short texts: What short text should be used to advertise the course on the "Bauhaus.module" website as an "Academic Bauhaus.module"

This information allows the coordination of the "Interdisciplinary course programme",

  • create the corresponding entry in the bison course catalogue,
  • assign this entry in the structure tree to the heading "Academic Bauhaus.modules" within the "Interdisciplinary course programme" and
  • advertise the entry on the "Bauhaus.module" website as an "Academic Bauhaus.module".

4. What needs to be considered when preparing for the event?

As soon as you have registered your course via the online form, it will be listed in the structure tree of the bison course catalogue under the heading "Interdisciplinary courses" as an ‘Academic Bauhaus.module’ and advertised on the "Bauhaus.modules" website.

5. What is a "Learning Agreement"?

Ideally, the participants in your ‘Bauhaus.module’ should be made up of students from different faculties and degree programmes. All students must clarify the recognition of examinations in their curriculum with the relevant student advisory service at the start of the course. In this context, the respective student counselling service may require the conclusion of a "Learning Agreement".

The "Learning Agreement" is a written preliminary agreement between the relevant academic counselling service, the student and the module coordinator. As a rule, the students concerned will approach you if they need your support in concluding a learning agreement. In most cases, all they need is a signature; the document remains in the student's possession

You can support students with the recognition of credits across degree programmes and faculties by

  • informing students from other faculties and degree programmes in your course at the beginning of the semester that they must consult their academic advisors to check the recognition of credits in their curriculum and, if necessary, conclude a "Learning Agreement", and
  • sign the "Learning Agreements" if the students concerned ask you to do so.
6. What needs to be taken into account when transferring the benefits?

In the case of "Academic Bauhaus.modules", the "grade lists" with all details of the credits earned as well as the grade or certificate are sent by the lecturers to the secretariats (or the authorised persons of the faculty offering the course) so that they can be recorded in the POS examination management system.

However, this requires that all participants have registered online for the examination. This is possible within a specified period (see "Timeline" in the right-hand sidebar). A data record is created in the POS examination management system once the examination has been duly registered, which makes it possible to book services.

If you have not properly registered for examinations online, please send the list of grades to the examination office responsible for you. There, the grades for students from other faculties and degree programmes can be recorded. The list must contain the following information:

Surname, first name, matriculation number

  • Credits and grade or certificate
  • Details of the degree programme and the associated examination regulations
  • The latter can be found in the registration list in bison.

The credits are then recognised in a separate step on the initiative of the student and by the examination office responsible for them.
