ORCID

What is ORCID?

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier) is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 that issues ORCID iDs since 2012. These iDs consist of 16 digits in blocks of four and serve researchers as a unique identifier. The associated ORCID profile allows researchers to collect information on publications, research datasets, conference contributions, and other outputs. What are the benefits of a personal ORCID profile?

What are the advantages of a personal ORCID profile?

  • The clear identification of the person, even if the name is the same as other people, a name change, different spellings or a change of institution.
  • Simplified communication and networking in connection with publishers, funding institutions and other platforms. The option of registering via iD is often supported.
  • The creation of an academic CV with self-selected and (if desired) validated publications.
  • The complete data protection-compliant setting of all publicly visible data on the profile.
  • The ability to automatically import publication data and connect to other author IDs of your own.
  • The easy creation and maintenance of the ORCID profile even when using multiple email addresses.
  • More time for research with an easy-to-maintain and portable profile.

Create and maintain an ORCID iD

  1. Simply register an ORCID iD.
  2. Privacy can be set via the account settings, trusted parties and the visibility of entries in the profile.
  3. Complete your academic CV and, if necessary, link it to other IDs (e.g. Scopus Author ID, Researcher ID)
  4. Manual entry or import of publications (e.g. using DOIs) or automatic access to objects through trusted parties (such as Crossref, Scopus, Web of Science, catalog of the German National Library, etc.)
  5. Use of the iD on the homepage, in the email signature, in third-party funding applications, towards publishers, repositories and other systems.

ORCID at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

Bauhaus-Universität Weimar strongly recommends its researchers to register with ORCID, actively use their ORCID iD, and use it in publications and grant applications. At the Publication Service of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar at the Digital Library Thuringia, the ORCID iD can already be provided for a person. This links to the profile of the researching person. The linkage with a unique iD helps to transparently present research in the university system in the context of Open Science and enables reporting to the state and funding agencies, which is crucial for financing.

Since September 2022, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has been a member of the ORCID-DE Consortium, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), and supports the global service in integrating the ORCID iD into scientific systems. Planned integrations of the ORCID interface include, for example, the University Bibliography of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, which is intended to synchronize publications in the bibliography and the ORCID profile.
