English Courses

Overview

Every semester, English courses are offered during the lecture period, namely

  • with 2 x 90 minutes per week (typically one in-person meeting and one moodle assignment per week),
  • for a duration of 12 weeks, and
  • for the CEFR target levels B 1 - C 1.

The individual course levels in the course system for English are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Target LevelModuleNumber of modules to be completed
B 2General EnglishB 2.1, B 2.2, B 2.3 in any order
C 1General EnglishC 1.1, C 1.2, C 1.3 in any order

In addition, further skill-oriented courses are offered, e.g. to refresh grammar knowledge or to improve oral or written communication skills.

Exams

All General English courses usually end with an exam in which listening comprehension and reading comprehension are tested and assessed. Oral communication skills are graded according to classroom performance. Grades for writing courses are usually based on continuous assessment.

Credit Points

One course has a scope of 3 CP. These are awarded if students have attended at least 2/3 of all lessons and passed the final exam.

Fees
The course fees are € 45 for students, € 60 for staff and € 225 for guest students.

Placement Test

  • Make a StudIP account (if you don't already have one).
  • Register on StudIP for the Placement Test.
  • Take the British Council Placement Test.
  • Send a screen shot of your results to english[at]uni-weimar.de. Be sure to include your name and matriculation number.

Once we have added your placement test results to your StudIP account, you will be able to sign up for courses.

Introduction to Academic Writing

Introduction to Academic Writing

Introduction to Academic Writing | Course number: 5134150

Course fee: € 45 (students) | 60 € (staff members) | 225 € (guests)

ECTS-CP: 3

This is a correspondence course with bi-weekly consultations. Places are available to students who are not following the Master’s degree programmes in Computer Science For Digital Media, Digital Engineering and Human-Computer Interaction.

The course concentrates mainly on structure in writing academic articles, essays and reports. We begin by examining the structure of individual paragraphs and move on to extended texts of various types (e.g. process essays, cause/effect, comparison/contrast, etc.). Particular attention is paid to connectives, i.e. transitional phrases and constructions which help you link ideas and paragraphs in a logical, systematic way.

English for Technical and Scientific Purposes (B 2/C 1)

Theses courses focus on helping students learn how to communicate effectively using scientific and technical English on different target levels. The focus will be placed on scientific oral communication. Regardless of the focus, the courses will also include reading, listening and active discussions related to current scientific and technical topics in order to ensure a well-rounded development of language skills.
