Half a century ago now, the 'European Architectural Heritage Year 1975' was a unique highlight in terms of public attention. In German-speaking countries, where it was known as the European Monument Preservation Year, the theme year was organised by the Council of Europe under the motto 'A future for our past'. The aim was to raise public awareness of the cultural value of historic buildings, to stop the impending loss of established urban structures and to find new ways of preserving the architectural heritage - politically, in terms of planning and socially. The four texts in this publication highlight different facets of this concern. Starting with postmodernism, the integration of monument protection into urban planning, the legal framework in the GDR and the pragmatic practice of building on existing structures, we look back on 1975 as the year of monument protection.
We are delighted to be involved in the anniversary campaign of the German National Committee for Monument Protection with this issue.
