The exhibition is presented with the motif of a moving box, which is constantly exaggerated to the point of absurdity.
Students have developed fan merchandise to accompany the exhibition...

UNBOXING BAUHAUS: Bauhaus Students Exhibit in Two Potsdam Galleries

What they will be bringing with them, carefully packed into moving boxes, are personal, critical, and experimental explorations of current issues depicted through painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and performance. Created in the interdisciplinary environment of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the pieces offer a new perspective on social, creative, and artistic narratives. But »UNBOXING BAUHAUS« is more than just an exhibition: it invites audiences to think and experience.

While the first presentation at the KunstHaus Potsdam has already been curated and planned, the works for the second part of the exhibition will be created site, which can be experienced live by the public. Starting on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, the participating artists will be living and working in Brandenburg’s state capital for ten days developing new works. They will be using the Kunstraum Potsdam spaces and visitors are invited to be present as new works are created.

The residency provides not only insights into artistic processes, but also unlocks the box in the best sense of the word:  What does it mean to be »from the Bauhaus« today? How are perspectives changing beyond the familiarity of campus? What images and expectations are currently associated with the Bauhaus? And what happens when we encounter these expectations artistically?

The visual design of the exhibition was also created entirely by students. A three-person team from the Visuelle Kommunikation (Visual Communication) department chose the motif of the moving box, exaggerating it to the point of absurdity. Giant boxes on trucks and billboards clearly illustrate the content of the exhibition: The Bauhaus is moving and leaving its familiar surroundings behind. The design encapsulates the »UNBOXING BAUHAUS« motto and plays with the question of what images of the Bauhaus are projected from the outside and what happens when you open these boxes.

All Potsdamers and visitors are invited to follow the project, whether at the vernissage in the Kunsthaus Potsdam during the residency or at the final exhibition in the Kunstraum and the finissage. Let’s unbox together!
