The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, together with nine European partner universities, officially launched its »BAUHAUS4EU« University Alliance on 1 January 2025. The Alliance will be funded by the European Union with a total of 14.4 million euros as part of the ERASMUS+ »European Universities« programme. The goal is to establish a European campus with integrated education and research programmes as well as flexible mobility for students and staff. From 11 to 14 March 2025, representatives from Alliance universities will meet for the first major working session in Weimar. > more
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an official member of the »Thüringer Nachhaltigkeitsabkommens« NAThüringen. The agreement aims to promote sustainable development focussing on resource-friendly climate and environmental protection, energy efficiency, and social sustainability. A sustainable focus at the university in teaching, research, and administration supports an environmentally and socially responsible transformation process. > more
»Demokratie stärken« (strengthening democracy) was the theme at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in 2024. Over 30 projects focussed on strengthening democracy and participating in democratic processes with the aim of boosting trust in science, art, and educational institutions in the 2024 Thuringian super election year. With its own history in mind, the university wanted to emphasise the importance of an open-minded society and a strong democracy in today's educational institutions. > more
VertiKKA is an inter- and transdisciplinary project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the »Ressourceneffiziente Stadtquartiere – RES:Z« initiative. In the fall of 2024, the VertiKKA vertical wastewater treatment plant prototypes were installed on the façade of the Bauhaus-Institute for Infrastructure Solutions (b.is) at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. This marked the beginning of the VertiKKA Reallabor. > more
The »Thüringer Aufbaubank« has approved the »Reallabor GrayToGreen: Dekarbonisierung durch Energieeffizienz und Kreislaufwirtschaft« research project. The Building Physics Professorship and the Urban Water Management and Sanitation Professorship are involved in the project together with the IAB-Institut Weimar, which has been affiliated with the university since 2024. The project expands on the VertiKKA research projects and aims to analyse and further develop a green façade, taking into consideration environmental impact, energy savings, and technology optimisation. > more
The Professorship of »Chair of Mechanics of Engineering Materials« is carrying out research on the most important building material of the21st century. Their goal is to create an intelligent concrete that, through flexibility and adaptability, will advance digital, automated construction while at the same time increasing the service life of buildings. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is providing the »StimuCrete« research project with nearly 1.9 million euros in funding until 2028 > more
The »Gewohnter Wandel. Gesellschaftliche Transformation und räumliche Materialisierung des Wohnens« DFG research training group website is online. The site provides an overview of the interdisciplinary housing research training group’s main focal points and offers insights into current developments and trends in the changing nature of housing. The site also provides information on events, publications, and profiles of the researchers involved. > more
The rural Thuringian Forest is facing major challenges in managing the current social and ecological crises. Architecture students are cooperating with local partners to develop ideas on how sustainable and geographically equitable development in the region could succeed. The European Urban Studies (IfEU) will be researching the Thuringian Mittelgebirge region until July 2025. > more
Radio has been a medium of listening worldwide for over 100 years. The six-part »Listening to the World – 100 Jahre Radiokunst« podcast series marks the end of the artistic research project carried out by the Experimental Radio Professorship. All six episodes were broadcast on Deutschlandfunk Kultur and are available through the ARD Audiothek and wherever podcasts are available. > more
Building physics knowledge is essential for sustainable construction in today’s building industry. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers a Master's Degree Programme combining practive and science in »Bauphysik und energetische Gebäudeoptimierung«. Should a shortage of skilled workers arise, applicants may qualify for this degree programme or other specialised Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS) in the fields of sound insulation and acoustics, heat and moisture alongside working. The next enrolment deadline is 15 March 2025. > more
Looking for support for your promising business idea? The Startup Hub »neudeli« is offering a six-month start-up grant to help get innovative ideas off the ground. The neudeli Fellowship is open to all students, alumni, artistic staff members, and doctoral candidates at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Funding is available for technology-orientated start-up ideas and projects in the fields of social and creative entrepreneurship. Applications are now being accepted. > more
From Lake Michigan to the Ilm | in 1993, Liz Bachhuber was one of the first female professors to be appointed to the newly founded Faculty of Design. She played a significant role in shaping the development of the faculty and the university until her retirement in 2018. > more
Alumna Katharina Benjamin, an editor of the BDA award-winning digital architecture magazine Kontextur, spoke to Vincent Mank, a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, about his time as a student in Weimar, non-traditional paths into architecture and combining different worlds in his everyday working life. > more
Director Duc Ngo Ngoc and his co-author Duc-Thi Bui were awarded the Golden Lola for their screenplay »Ha-Neu - Berlin«. Duc Ngo Ngoc is a graduate of the Media Art and Design Degree Programme. The two screenwriters developed their screenplay together with Marcel Lenz from Weimar-based »ostlicht filmproduktion GmbH«. Their work is set to be made into a film in the next years. »Ha-Neu - Berlin« touches on a sensitive and important topic: the fate of young people in Vietnam, especially within the context of the tragic events in London in 2019. > more
The international dialogue-free SalSa Film Festival in Weimar bridges language barriers through its universal visual language and attracts submissions from all over the world. Initiated by filmmakers in the Sahar Darvishzadeh and Salman Vakili, Faculty of Art and Design, the event invites you to discover stories without words. A fascinating trip around the world of visual storytelling. The deadline for the festival, which takes place in November, is 10 April! > more
Experimenting, exchanging ideas and learning with enthusiasm: The newly founded Science Discovery Centre at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar welcomes children and youth to broaden their knowledge in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and gain professional inspiration. > more

The university’s Audimax has been renamed the Maurice-Halbwachs-Auditorium to honour French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs. This renaming honours the life and work of esteemed French sociologist and philosopher Maurice Halbwachs, founder of the concept of collective memory. The university is, at the same time, sending a clear signal against fascism and authoritarianism. In 1944, Maurice Halbwachs was interned at the Buchenwald concentration camp. He died there in 1945 due to inhumane conditions. > more
On 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will mark the end of its multi-year project, »Erinnerungs- und Informationsmedien auf dem Campus«. The aim of the project was to investigate the Nazi history of university buildings and to make it public. The project focussed on two buildings: Marienstraße 13/15, once the headquarters of the »Thüringer Landesamtes für Rassewesen« (Thuringian State Office for Racial Affairs), and Belvederer Allee 6, a former »Jewish House«. > more
Fritz Goro (1901–1986) studied in 1921 and 1922 at the early Bauhaus in Weimar. He later went on to become one of the most important science photographers in the USA. The university is paying tribute to Goro’s extraordinary contribution to science photography in the exhibition in the University Library starting on 6 March 2025. The exhibition features work from across five decades influenced by his Jewish-German-American exile history. > more
Since graduating from university with a degree in Visuelle Kommunikation (Visual Communication), Olivia Vieweg has authored and illustrated six award-winning graphic novels. The screenplay for the post-apocalyptic story »Endzeit« received the prestigious »Tankred-Dorst-Drehbuchpreis«. The internationally acclaimed film adaptation premiered at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival. Her most notable works are now set to be presented at an exhibition in the University Library from 3 April to 8 May. Olivia Vielweg is one of the most successful comic artists in Germany. > more
The »Verein der Freunde des Bauingenieur- und Baustoffingenieurwesens (vfbb)« supports teaching, research, and further education in civil engineering and building materials engineering. The new board, which includes Prof. Hans-Joachim Bargstädt and Jr. Prof. Nikolaus Seitz, focuses on developing skills and expanding the dialogue between industry and science. The aim is to increase global relations with industry, authorities, and the academic network. Become a member! > more
The »Deutschlandstipendium« is an excellent way for companies, foundations and private individuals to directly support talented students. In recognition of their outstanding achievements, students receive a financial grant and active support. > more
