SCIENCE MILE Q3 and OPEN LAB NIGHT – Bauhaus-Universität Weimar opens labs to the public
On Friday, 15 July, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is hosting two key events as part of its summaery2022 annual show. At 12:30–6 pm, visitors are invited to explore fascinating experiments, go on lab tours and view computer simulations along the 300-metre SCIENCE MILE Q3 on Coudraystraße: Are houses made of straw sustainable? And what exactly does plaster have to do with the coal phase-out? And how does a virtual mechanics lab work? Afterwards, the OPEN LAB NIGHT 2022 will begin in Schwanseestraße with virtual reality, game design and 3D engineering. Until 10 pm, visitors can tour the computer science labs and speak with the scientists and students while they enjoy cold beverages, barbecued food and DJ music.
»SCIENCE MILE Q3« open day at Coudraystraße 4–13; Friday, 15 July 2022, 12:30–6 pm
The SCIENCE MILE Q3 includes several research facilities on Coudraystraße equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as computer tomography, scanning electron microscopy, 3D printing, sensor technology and an electrolyser for the production of hydrogen. Among others, the Materials Research and Testing Institute (MFPA Weimar) and numerous professorships of the Faculty of Civil Engineering are based here. Particularly families with children are warmly invited to explore the labs during the open day, to try their hand at countless experiments and to get involved in hands-on activities, such as:
Plaster recycling
To mark its thirtieth anniversary, MFPA Weimar will present a colourful mix of materials research and development in the applied fields of »sustainable construction and building materials«, »environmental protection (Green-Tec)«, »resource conservation« and »functionalised materials and components«. Among others, visitors can create little figurines from waste plaster to take home with them and learn what plaster has to do with the coal phase-out.
Straw as a sustainable building material
Experimental studies on the load-bearing and deformation properties of building components and structures are carried out on a space covering 550 m². At 1 pm, 3 pm and 5 pm, a special test set-up will demonstrate that the sustainable building material straw not only insulates well, but also has extremely good load-bearing properties.
FIB lab tours
Exclusive tours of the labs of the F.A. Finger Institute of Building Materials will be offered once an hour on the hour. Whether cold, heat, pressure or moisture – visitors learn just how much building materials have to withstand in order to meet the diverse demands of new construction, renovation, environmental protection and recycling. Meet in the foyer at Coudraystraße 11.
A total of 20 exhibitors will be showcased on the SCIENCE MILE Q3. See here for an overview: http://www.uni-weimar.de/q3
OPEN LABS 2022: BBQ, drinks and music in the inner courtyard at Schwanseestraße 143, Friday, 15 July 2022, 5–10 pm; Saturday, 2–5 pm
There won’t only be a (semi)scientific exchange with a barbecue and music on Friday. Fascinating things also await in the labs of the department of computer science, which will remain open until late into the night. Among others, these include:
Virtual reality lab
Some of the projects exhibited don’t only work with simple »Virtual Reality«, but rather also with »Social Virtual Reality«. This involves several users moving simultaneously and at one in the virtual world, interacting with one another, and experiencing a music performance or co-creatively building digital worlds together, for example.
Bauhaus Gamesfabrik
During the interdisciplinary project »Indiegame Development Lab II«, students from the Faculty of Art and Design and the Faculty of Media developed video games in less than three months. Visitors are warmly invited to test the gameplay and fun factor of their work.
3D RealityCapture ScanLab
Equipped with carefully orchestrated, state-of-the-art imaging technology, this lab doesn’t only offer scientific insights into current photorealistic 3D reconstructions. Visitors can also take three-dimensional selfies using more than 100 cameras.
A total of more than 20 projects will be presented during the OPEN LAB NIGHT on Friday evening and the OPEN LABS on Saturday afternoon. See here for an overview: www.uni-weimar.de/oln
