1. Successful University Library Book Sale
In June, many visitors took advantage of the opportunity to purchase withdrawn but well-kept library books at the book sale.
A total of 803 titles found new owners. The library raised €989 through this sale, which can now be used to acquire new books and the latest editions.
2. Notice for our visitors: high heat may force restrictions in library operations
The period of high heat in the second half of June made clear that our building – especially the main building – is not equipped to deal with sustained periods of temperatures above 30 degrees. Especially the top study room floor regularly becomes hot enough to render it unfit for use. If future heat periods last longer (min. two weeks) and the temperature in these rooms climbs above 35 degrees on a regular basis, we may be forced to close them for use. Study room reservations may be cancelled as a result. This will be indicated in the reservation system. We hope you understand.
Some background information: in 2018 (!) an application was filed with the Thüringer Landesamt für Bau und Verkehr (TLBV) to improve our main building’s capacity to deal with heat. The main building was constructed in 2005. Suggestions listed in this application were exterior shading and an optimized ventilation system. So far, these suggestions unfortunately have not been implemented.
3. »summaery2026« – Library becomes an exhibition space
As part of the Bauhaus University Weimar’s annual exhibition, students and faculty members will present their work, ideas, and discussions on the theme »prompt‽« from July 9 to 12 on campus and both within and outside the city.
The exhibition »IN TUNE Between attunement and performance: towards a practice of co-design« will be on view in the University Library. It showcases a research project by the Architecture and Product Design programs on alternative production and design methods (instructors: Dr. Mara Trübenbach, Mira Müller). In addition, various events will take place in the Steubenstraße 6 complex (University Library / Maurice Halbwachs Auditorium). Information on the individual projects can be found in the project overview.
4. On display in the library starting August 4: QUILTING TIME, bachelor’s thesis exhibition by Soo Ah Youn, Visual Communication
A quilt thrives on its layers: fabric, batting, and backing are bound together into a greater whole by countless stitches. The graduation project QUILTING TIME adopts this logic, understanding quilting as a visual, social, and deeply personal practice. The starting point is a hand-sewn piece by Soo Ah’s aunt, Kim Minseon, from South Korea. Her quilts are used, passed down, and preserved within the family; they are everyday objects and, at the same time, vessels of time, care, and memory. Grounded in this private family archive, the exhibition explores how quilting functions as a collaborative craft and a form of living cultural knowledge.
On display are photographs, interviews, archival fragments, an editorial book, as well as outcomes from the open workshop It’sQUILTING TIME, which took place in the textile workshop at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Individual fragments, images, voices and hands interweave within the space to form a multifaceted narrative about textile work – and about the question of what remains when time becomes visible, stitch by stitch.
The exhibition will be on display from August 4 through 24 on Level -1 of the library.
