(Presence = Man +) Prosthesis,

an installation

Man is a technical being, has ever been, now feeling more and more disjointed from its ever more complex technical prostheses, as it is at the same time growing together with them more and more.

In the installation, a smartphone will measure the (invisible) signals/waves that we and our digital prostheses, our smartphones, emit in the room, defining our analog and digital presence/identity/entirety. Through various “actors” the measured data will then be live displayed/transferred in an analog material to make them tangible and visible.

Considerations:

Material:

- Fluid: non newtonian (thick/liquid), maybe thermochromic, black

- Actors under/in the fluid: (Sound)-waves/vibration, pressure (fans/turbines), heat (Peltiere-Elements)

How will we control them? How the rules/translation from data to forms will look like?

Interpretation of data necessary for:

- bringing different data sizes and scales without relation between each other together

- make single dimension multidimensional or vice versa.

- display data like WiFi-names

Output conditions/needs/thoughts:

- immediate response when human is present.

- longtime changes visible -> could be visible in the room -> splashes etc.

- overall entirety but also detail image

- equal-weighted sensors -> no hypertrophy of some senses

- pure smartphone /no extra sensors/extensions

- haptic: yes (->non toxic), direct influence trough viewer: no

Inspirations/Influences:

- Bernard Stiegler in „The Ister“ about man and technics: youtube: part 1 part 2

- Carsten Nicolai: Wellenwanne, Chroma actor and more

- Hannes Kalk: .fluid: speculative proposal for a touch-friendly interface [1]

- Rebecca Horn: e.g. Körperphantasien

- Christina Kubisch

- Ryoji Ikeda: Dataverse

- Olafur Eliason: Notion Motion

- Martin Krzywinski: music video for Max Cooper

- previous influences and thoughts on our telepresence project [2]
