We live in weird times, where Internet memes could start a Third World War, where the Internet offers the hope of transcultural communication and at the same time creates an uncontrollable chaos of shitstorms and cyberbullying that makes it seem like we are thrown ‘back into the future’ of the digital Middle Ages.

How do we define authenticity and sincerity in times of fake news and post-truth politics? When laptops and smartphones become an important part of self-fulfillment and identity, when everybody can be a ‘news’ reporter, who can you believe to be sincere?

This course asks the recurring, ever haunting question of what is authentic. Has the search for it always been a deceptive road? How real does authenticity need to be today?

We will investigate, question and challenge modern and historical concepts related to the topic and create performative works that can be presented in the form of live performances, video works or installations. The course supports and excercises independent, self-motivated work. Together, we will create an environment in which students can produce and discuss their own subjects related to the matter.
