Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL, sometimes also referred to as »Virtual exchange«) is an innovative pedagogical approach, that deepens global engagement by bringing together faculty and students from around the globe to collaborate within and across academic disciplines on a joint virtual project. COIL experiences involve no travel costs and no credit transfer or curriculum modification as assignments are part of an existing course. COIL projects reinforce the development of the digital, intercultural, and social skills necessary for success in the 21st Century workplace and are an efficient tool for internationalization@home, enhancing equality and diversity for all students.
This Training series is offered by the International Office as part of the INTeach project (DAAD funding 2021-2023), which aims at promoting and supporting international teaching and learning at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
- Target group: Teaching staff, educational developers and everyone responsible for and interested in internationalisation and curriculum development
- Trainer: Eva Haug, COIL expert, educational advisor and senior lecturer at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences
- Registration: susanne.wille@uni-weimar.de
INTeach offers more in depth training on COIL in 2022:
1. COIL Workshop
Incorporating a COIL collaboration into your existing course does not require an expensive technology platform or extensive redesign of your course. All you need is an interest in innovative pedagogy, a bit of flexibility and enthusiasm, and some thoughtful preparation. In this 120 min workshop we will explore in more detail the pedagogical design of COIL projects and how to get started. After this workshop, you will be able to describe learning outcomes for a module you would like to internationalise, you will have ideas for a collaborative task, and can create a profile to be matched with an international partner for a COIL.
- Date: 4 February 2022 12.30 – 2.30 pm
- Target group: Teaching staff, educational developers and administrative staff who may be interested in or involved in COIL/Virtual exchange activities
- No. participants: max. 30
- Trainer: Eva Haug, COIL expert, educational advisor and senior lecturer at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences
2. COIL Design Course
This professional development course covers all the topics and issues required to set up and implement a COIL project into existing courses and curricula. You and your international partner will participate and work together in 4 modules and develop your ideas into a COIL project ready to be implemented. From learning outcomes and collaborative activities, to assessment and reflection: all COIL design elements will be explained, designed and reviewed.
The training requires no previous experience with COIL or Virtual exchange, but you do need to have a professor or teaching staff member from an international university who is willing to participate and collaborate with you. (If you need assistance in finding an international partner, please contact the International Office.)
- Date: April – Mai 2022 (t.b.a.)
- Target group: Teaching staff with their international teaching partner
- Workload: +/- 20 hours.
