Departing from the premise that within today’s polycrisis collective voices of political, ecological, racial, pro-feminist and technological protest are critiquing, and resisting hegemonic forms of language as a means to establish new social demands and rejections of the status quo. This Bauhaus Module will address the poetic, humorous, and brutal linguistic properties of the artist manifesto and discusses how the form becomes a vital tool for creative revolt in times of crisis. Students will be given the opportunity to collectively debate our current socio-political upheavals and articulate their (creative) concerns through the means of a collaborative manifesto. Through creative writing disciplines and inclusive exercises, this course shall experiment with the dramatic, militant and rhythmic aura art manifestos produce. With a particular emphasis on looking at writing as a tedious human exercise with theoretical concerns surrounding authorship. We will address in our post-human era, how might the likes of AI, and ChatGPT navigate potential manifesto’s. To debate where the ethical/artistic lines should be drawn when we try to give prompts about socio-political and digital concerns and injustices. This course welcomes students to openly let their artistic, architectural, urbanistic, and media-based thoughts be guided by the written word, which importantly asks, in our calls for attention, how can we encourage creative practices of dealing with language to transfer knowledge and further artistic approaches to social change?
From FT Marinetti’s The Foundation and Manifesto of Futurism (1909), Walter Gropius’s What Is Architecture? (1919), VNS Matrix’s Cyberfeminist Manifesto (1991), to Tania Bruguera’s Artist’s Rights Manifesto (2012). This seminar, through lectures and workshops, will analyse the art manifesto as a global piece of polemic and expressive work. In discussing its many visual and lyrical forms, executions, word-play and emancipatory structure. Students will learn the ability to freely place their artistic and socio-political concerns, through the manifesto form, and in the end, present their joint work as a final group(s) visual presentation. This Bauhaus Module is designed for Bachelor, Master and PhD students coming from all facilities. Who, not only aim to have further confidence in articulating their creative ideas within the written form, but for those who particularly wish to produce collaborative and interdisciplinary ideas, that aim to support further calls for social awareness. |

Please note that this course and its credits will be from the A+U faculty. For students from other faculties please read the Learning Agreement to make sure that you can fully accept the credits of this module after completion. |
