Abstract: On invitation by Prof. Bärbel Kühne (FH Hannover) and Prof. Alexander Sahoo (HfKB), Felix Sattler talked about how diatoms – unicellular algae – made their way from 19th century's taxonomic collections into art and design research. The perception of the algae and "bionic" works inspired by them, changed not only due to new scientific findings and new technologies: vice versa the way science regarded the organisms was also a product of the respective contemporary aesthetic beliefs and models.

The lecture was part of the series Sammeln und Sortieren organized by Prof. Alexander Sahoo and Prof. Bärbel Kühne.
