MUSTERKISTEN -- Die gute Form

Aufgabenstellung

I have chosen corks because it has been my interest for a long time. Several years ago I started to collect them probably since I was 10 years old… At that time I did not know anything about them.

Corks "useless" object which usually hasn't got any important significance in our lives. It is something we usually throw away after we finish with the wine. During this Project I had a chance to learn a lot of interesting things about them. Briefly, they are made of barks. The trees which we could use their barks for manufacturing corks should be grown up in a really rainy climate. For a good quality bark a tree should be at least 50 years old and for the best quality it has to be 150 years old. A few more interesting things that I learned about them is, if you want to keep a bottle of wine for a long time, the cork should be a bit older than other the wine and a cork can stay warm in the winter and cold in the summer.

It was quite easy to find some corks for this suitcase project here, as my collection is not with me here in Weimar, apart from a few parties around the University most of them are came from a restaurant. I spent some time to decide for a layout because there is a lot of way to cathegorise these "same" objects. They are same in a way because they all manufactured for the same reasen, to keep the wine inside the bottle... Nevertheless they can be completely different from each other. Are they corks for a red wine or white wine? Are they long or short, are they plastik or are they mixed material, are they damaged, are they corks for champagne (scientificly sparkling wine), are they from an old wine bottle or new one?

Moreower, my layout is an allusion to the discussions about the healt aspect of wine. People really would never imagine that a kind of alcohol could be very healty if you drink a glass of a day. Wine is a suprising drink, every time we drink a glass of wine it goes to our circulation system and apart from the dynamic looking which, is the reason of my choice of a circle layout, just like a wave of tornado in our bodies, it goes even deeper every time we sip the wine.

My Cathegories

From right top through the middle,

1-Non-sparkling wine corks

2-Corks with no sign

3- Corks with some very small sign of manufacturer

4-Corks with only a stamp of the company (which it could give a clue where it came from)

5-Corks only with a stamp and a little information with numbers

6-Corks with stamp, information and some marks

7-Corks with some grape patterns

8-A cork with a mixed material (Pink plastic with a writing saying"La Belle Sandrine" and a plastik cork)

The reasons for chosing red background is first of all it is a sign for red wine, and my second reason is to make a contrast with the yellowy colour of the corks. I spent 7 hours to built up this suitcase.
