| "USER MANUALS: Instructions between Conceptual Art and IKEA" deals with the instruction/user manual as the vantage point for both, graphic design as well as fine arts practice. We will investigate the history of pictograms and the graphic user manual as well as artists' strategies of "instruction pieces" (Yoko Ono and others), "indetermination" (John Cage's musical compositions as instructions for performers) and other contemporary works. We will experiment and critically reflect the roles of and interrelation between designer/artist and reader/customer/perfomer. The class has a strong emphasis on typography and layout.
