Dear Alumni,
The winter semester at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar began with 800 newly enrolled students, newly elected faculty leadership and the election of a new president. On 1 November 2022, the University Assembly elected Peter Benz, Associate Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University, as President of the university. Among other subjects, we report on an alumni film project, the »SCIP plastics« research log, and launch a questionnaire on your continuing education needs. Welcome! Finally Back and in Person!

»Lovely to see the Audimax once again filled to capacity!« – with these words, Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, President (interim) of the university, welcomed over 400 students on 12 October 2022 at the Matriculation Ceremony in the Audimax. In her welcoming address, Prof. Emes provided students with an insight into current topics at the university, such as democratic coexistence ad social participation, diversity, internationality, sustainability and environmental protection. Students are challenged from day one to think, study and act independently and responsibly and to actively involve themselves in student life. >> more

Solidarity With the Oppressed People in Iran

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar condemns the violence being committed by the Iranian government and the oppression of women, students and academics. This situation is extremely concerning for the university’s Presidium who stands in solidarity with the oppressed people in Iran, the protesters and the global Iranian community. Members of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are strongly committed to a free and open society, democracy and the equality of all people. >> more

New Leadership in Faculties

All four of the faculties at have elected new faculty heads. The newly elected leaders will hold office for a three-year term. Prof. Dr. Tom Lahmer has been elected Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Prof. Dr. Sigrun Langner as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, Prof. Andreas Mühlenberend Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design, and Prof. Dr. Lorenz Engell Dean of the Faculty of Media. >> more

New President Elected

Peter Benz has been elected President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. On Tuesday, 1 November 2022 Bauhaus-Universität Weimar University Assembly elected Peter Benz as President. Peter Benz studied architecture at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and was employed here as an artistic staff member. He has been living in Hong Kong since 2006, where he is an associate professor at the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University. He is expected to assume his position as President in the first quarter of 2023, following his appointment by Wolfgang Tiefensee, Thuringian Minister für Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und Digitale Gesellschaft. >> more

New Career Path With Tenure Track

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has implemented a tenure track career model as part of the procedure for appointing professors. This means that the university provides and artists with an attractive, plannable and transparent career path to a W3 professorship position in Weimar. Students to Attend 27th Climate Change Conference

At an invitation from the United Nations (UN), Weimar students will be presenting their ideas for sustainable textile use at the COP27 in Egypt on 11 November 2022. In a lively discussion with international textile industry retailers and manufacturers, they presented concepts on how to optimise the recycling of old clothing. These concepts were developed as part of the interdisciplinary Bauhaus.Module »Textile.Umwelten«. >> more

Digital communication makes connecting continents easy, but it does cannot replace in-person exchange. This is especially true for the research team from Germany and Bangladesh. The current instalment of the »SCIP Plastics« research log looks at the first joint meeting in Bangladesh with project members from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, the »Instituts für sozial-ökologische Forschung (ISOE)«, the Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET) and the Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET). >> more

Our Gypsum is Running Out

As a part of the »Science and Public Interest« (Allianz Thüringer Ingenieurwissenschaften), building materials expert Prof. Horst-Michael Ludwig, Director of the F.A. Finger Institute for Building Material Engineering at the university, spoke about the importance of natural gypsum in the concrete industry. With the help of the »NaMin« research project, new building materials and components with reduced calcium sulphate binder are set to be developed using renewable raw materials and mineral secondary raw materials. >> more

Each Degree Counts for Gas and Energy Costs

Mara Geske, Indoor Climate Expert in an Interview | Researchers at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar have been testing and analysing ways to improve the energy use in existing buildings and urban areas for years. A focal point of this research is energy and heating demand simulations. >> more

Alumni-Discussions | Michael Siebenbrodt

In the latest issue of Alumni-Discussions, Michael Siebenbrodt, long-time curator of the Bauhaus Collection at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, talks about, among other topics, his studies in architecture and civil engineering at the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Weimar. After graduating, he was commissioned to find a new use for the Bauhaus sites in Dessau. His contract at the Bauhaus in Dessau ended, however, in 1988, due to the events of contemporary history. In a discussion with University Library Director Dr. Frank Simon-Ritz, they discuss the Haus Am Horn model house, its use in the GDR, the history of its renovation and its 2023 anniversary. >> more

Respectful Behaviour Through Gender-Sensitive Language

The Senate passed a policy was passed by a large majority in favour of using gender-sensitive language at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Prof. Dr. Jutta Emes, President (interim) of the University, affirmed: »Our university has proven that we place the utmost importance on creating an educational environment that is inclusive and free of discrimination. In using gender-appropriate language, we can and will address individuals respectfully, regardless of their gender. This is not something that will change in the future.« >> more

A Declaration of Love for the University and Weimar

UFA Serial Drama GmbH spent four weeks filming in Weimar for their latest series with the working title »Irgendwas mit Medien«. Many of the main scenes of the series, which tells the story of a student beginning their studies in Media Art, were filmed on the university campus. The project is the brainchild of Jano Kaltenbach and Mirko Muhshoff, both graduates of the Media Art degree programme. The series essentially tells their own story. The two not only provided the ideas for the material, they also wrote the script, directed it and play the main roles in the eight-part mini-series. >> more

»Kritzelkiste«: An Illustrations Podcast Series

»Kritzelkiste – Der Illustrationspodcast« is Visuelle Kommunikation (Visual Communication) student Hannes Naumann’s Bachelor's thesis. In interviews with illustrators, Naumann discusses not only work, techniques and inspiration, but also the hurdles he has encountered in the industry and the topic of money. One of the format’s special features is the »Plot Twist«, a mysterious box that plays an interesting role in the discussions. >> more
