Project description
»ሠላም bauhaus« (selam bauhaus) means »hello bauhaus« in Amharic, one of the major languages in Ethiopia.
Together with the visitor, this interactive exhibition offers insight into the long-standing cooperation between the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany and the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
One could also re-interpret the Amharic letters as »Why Bauhaus« challenging the overuse of this label in 2019. The exhibition makers, however, believe that the ambitions and methods of the State Bauhaus can still inspire us in the present day: its interdisciplinary and practice-oriented teaching of architecture and design responded to the rapid changes in society and their impact on the built environment. Against the background of global climate change and migration, the approaches of the State Bauhaus are today more contemporary than ever and thus explain the cross-reference in the title.
Coinciding with the centenary of the Bauhaus and the 65th anniversary of EiABC, this exhibition presents the work done so far in research, teaching and cooperation between BUW and EiABC. »ሠላም bauhaus« reflects on the cooperation's past and discusses options for its future.
