Weimar Media Studies on air: »Schematic: the philosophy of TV as a radio lecture« begins
How do the media engineer our ability to think? And how does the mass medium of television regulate our actions, feelings and knowledge? These and other exciting media-studies-related questions have been tackled by Dr. Lorenz Engell, Professor of Media Philosophy at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Faculty of Media, on Radio Lotte since 4 May 2020.
The digital summer semester is necessitating new formats for seminars, plenary sessions and lectures. In response, Weimar media philosopher Dr. Lorenz Engell has relocated his lectures from the lecture hall to a radio setting: every Monday to Thursday from 3 pm, he can be heard giving 20 to 25 minute talks on local Weimar radio station Radio Lotte (www.radiolotte.de). This means that talks are open to the general public in addition to the usual audience of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students.
The »Schematic: the philosophy of TV as a radio lecture« series examines the mass medium of television, the various ways it has developed and the blurring of its boundaries. Global, image, and real-life situations are constantly being tackled by television in ways that often remain undetected. »TV defines what will have a presence. It becomes a series. It flies around the world. It slows things down and speeds them up. It connects screens with dense environments and then inhabits them. It writes its own story and then positions it as the only story. It excites and bores. It can be easily switched on anywhere. It is the schematic par excellence. And this is something we need to talk about!« says Engell regarding the content of his radio broadcasts for the coming weeks.
