»The Fifth Wheel«: Film sheds light on the dramatic situation of women in Afghanistan and is intended to support the search for a Bauhaus University mentor for an art student from Afghanistan who needs to flee
On Wednesday, 15 June 2022, 7 pm, the film »The Fifth Wheel« will be shown in the Audimax of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. With the screening, the Professorship »Crossmedial Moving Image« would like to focus on the fate of Afghan women, which has been pushed into the background due to ongoing developments in Ukraine. The current occasion is the imminent arrival of a future Afghan student for whom a mentor is being sought.
The documentary »The Fifth Wheel« accompanies the women's theatre group »Simorgh«, whose members have been persecuted in their home country Afghanistan since the Taliban took power. The protagonists themselves recorded the footage for the film with their smartphones and take the viewers with them into their everyday lives, which are marked by fleeing from one hiding place to another. The result is an episodic documentary film that shows the rough everyday life and the desperation of the women, but also the strength they can draw from what they have achieved so far.
One of the protagonists had applied to study Visual Communication at the Faculty of Art and Design and successfully passed the aptitude test. She is currently still in Afghanistan and will hopefully learn German at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar from October 2022 and then begin her artistic studies. A mentor is currently being sought for her to help her during the acclimatisation phase and her arrival in Weimar.
The film will be followed by a discussion with the actress Tahera Hashemi, who is part of the theatre group »Simorgh« and now a member of the acting ensemble of the German National Theatre Weimar, and the editor of the film and Master's student of media art/media design, Solimann Peerzadah.
