Additional courses in DIY, Bioart, Biodesign and Environmental Issues.
The Professorship »Media Environments« is pleased to present its curriculum for the winter semester 2022/23, which is funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education. With a variety of specialised modules, students can acquire knowledge in DIY, bioart, biodesign and environmental issues across all degree programmes.
In order to raise awareness about coexistence with living organisms, we have expanded our curriculum to address climate change. The additional modules include thematic lessons and hands-on experiments in or related to our DIY biolab. The curriculum will unfold through participatory learning with a "maker" philosophy in new teaching modules and a series of workshops.
Designing Utopias: Theory and Practice, a project module by instructor Yashas Shetty.
This module is a seminar on building tools for studying climate parameters. Artist Yashas Shetty is co-founder of the Hackteria network and is best known for his work with (Art)ScienceBLR, a public lab at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design & Technology.
Sustainable Aesthetics, a specialized module by Mindaugas Gapsevicius.
In the course, participants will try to find answers for sustainable ways in artistic methods and forms.
Relationship Patterns: Environments of Cryptogamic Flora, a specialized module by artist and molecular biologist Dr. Klaus Fritze.
The course explores ephemeral and permanent connections between species in the environment.
DIY Biolab Driver's License
A crash course which introduces the use of our DIY Biolab and is mandatory for its use, conducted by biohacker Alessandro Volpato. This module introduces the use of a DIY Biolab and its use in conjunction with artistic practices.
In addition to the modules, the Professorship offers weekend workshops that can be attended according to interest and for which credits can be earned:
- Workshop with Dr. Jan Vondrak on lichen Scheduled: November 12 and 13, 2022.
- Workshop with Prof. Dr. Katja Bühler on photosynthesis/biofilms Planned: Nov 19 and Nov 28, 2022
- Workshop with Zackery Denfeld on endophytes Planned: Dec 2 and 3, 2022
- Workshop with Mario Behling on Hacking Pocket Science Lab Planned: Jan 13 and Jan 14, 2023
In addition, the staff offers support in the area of DIY sensors/electronics, provided by Christian Doeller. General support will be provided by Alessandro Volpato and by our students Amelia Eickhoff and Cosmo Schüppel.
