Südländer

Südländer – Uruguay

design project for master students (winter semester 13-14)

The program ‘Südländer’ combines introductory seminars with design projects in south american cities. These projects deal with complex existing contexts and are first explored during an intensive workshop on location. Subsequently the theme is developed within a semester project for master students.

This year’s edition of ‘Südländer’ is organized in Uruguay. The site for the design project is located in the oldest area of Montevideo, the ‘Ciudad Veija’ and includes three urban plots with old warehouses facing the port administration building. The warehouses are harbor property and were formerly used as storage buildings in direct vicinity to the quays. Nowadays they are used as a covered car park for employees of the harbor administration. Though very central, the area is dilapidated and desolate, it has a great potential to be developed due to its architectural heritage, its central location and its vicinity towards the Rio del la Plata and the ferry terminal.

The design proposal should offer architectural solutions for combining accommodation, events spaces, a cafe and ateliers in this existing context.
